Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Mine Planner to join our Fort McMurray operations. This critical role is integral to the successful execution of our large-scale oil sands mining projects, focusing on optimizing efficiency, productivity, and safety. As a Mine Planner, you will be responsible for developing and integrating comprehensive short-term, medium-term, and long-term mine plans. Your work will involve detailed design, scheduling, and economic analysis to ensure the sustainable and profitable extraction of resources, aligning with Suncor’s operational goals and stringent regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, analyze, and optimize comprehensive mine plans, ranging from daily/weekly schedules to multi-year strategic plans for open-pit operations.
  • Utilize advanced mine planning software (e.g., Deswik, MineSight, Vulcan) for pit design, dump design, haul road design, and scheduling.
  • Conduct detailed economic evaluations, risk assessments, and sensitivity analyses of mine plans to identify optimal strategies and improve project value.
  • Collaborate with geological, geotechnical, and hydrogeological teams to integrate accurate resource models and ground conditions into mine designs.
  • Monitor adherence to mine plans, track production metrics, and facilitate timely adjustments to plans based on operational performance and changing conditions.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to mine operations personnel, ensuring effective communication and implementation of planning directives.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports, presentations, and data visualizations for various stakeholders, summarizing planning objectives, progress, and recommendations.
  • Identify and champion opportunities for process improvements, technological advancements, and operational efficiencies within the mine planning function.
  • Ensure all planning activities strictly comply with Suncor's safety protocols, environmental regulations, and corporate governance policies.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering, Geological Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 4 years of progressive experience in mine planning, with a focus on large-scale open-pit mining operations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with industry-standard mine planning software packages (e.g., Deswik, MineSight, Vulcan, XPAC).
  • Strong understanding of mining methods, unit operations, equipment selection, and productivity analysis.
  • Exceptional analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, with a keen eye for detail.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly.
  • Proven ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license (or equivalent) for travel to and from site.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA or eligible for immediate registration.
  • Experience in oil sands mining or other large-scale bulk materials handling operations.
  • Familiarity with geological modeling software and principles.
  • Experience with production reconciliation and cost control in a mining context.
  • Project management experience or certification.
