Job Description
Anglo American is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Metallurgist to join our dynamic technical team in South Africa. This pivotal role will be instrumental in optimising metallurgical processes, ensuring the highest recovery rates and product quality across our operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for applying advanced metallurgical principles to analyse, design, and implement solutions for complex processing challenges, primarily within our mineral processing plants. You will play a crucial role in improving operational efficiency, reducing costs, and enhancing overall plant performance through continuous improvement initiatives and innovative problem-solving. Key Responsibilities
- Optimise metallurgical processes to achieve target recovery, grade, and throughput.
- Conduct detailed analysis of plant performance data to identify bottlenecks and areas for improvement.
- Design, plan, and execute metallurgical test work programs, both in laboratory and plant environments.
- Develop and implement process control strategies and standard operating procedures.
- Troubleshoot operational issues and provide expert technical support to plant operations teams.
- Monitor and report on key metallurgical performance indicators.
- Participate in commissioning new plant equipment and process modifications.
- Contribute to capital project development by providing metallurgical input and expertise.
- Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and quality standards.
- Mentor junior metallurgists and technical staff.
- Stay abreast of industry trends, new technologies, and best practices in metallurgy.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as a Metallurgist in a mineral processing environment.
- Strong understanding of mineral processing principles (comminution, flotation, gravity separation, leaching).
- Sound knowledge of process control systems and data analysis software.
- Proficiency in metallurgical accounting and reporting.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities.
- Ability to conduct technical investigations and provide actionable recommendations.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety and environmental stewardship.
Preferred Qualifications
- Postgraduate degree in Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
- Experience with specific mineral commodities relevant to Anglo American's operations (e.g., PGMs, iron ore, copper).
- Project management experience in a metallurgical context.
- Proficiency in process simulation software (e.g., METSIM, JKSimMet).
- Registered Professional Engineer (Pr. Eng) or eligible for registration with ECSA.
