Job Description

We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Medical Biller to join our dynamic financial services team at UF Health in Gainesville, Florida. In this crucial role, you will be instrumental in ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of our billing processes, directly contributing to the financial health of our organization and the accessibility of quality healthcare for our patients. The Medical Biller will be responsible for preparing, submitting, and following up on claims to various insurance companies and government payers. This position requires a thorough understanding of medical coding, billing regulations, and reimbursement methodologies to maximize revenue and minimize denied claims. You will navigate complex billing scenarios, interpret explanation of benefits (EOBs), and resolve discrepancies with meticulous attention to detail. Success in this role demands strong analytical skills, exceptional organizational abilities, and a proactive approach to problem-solving. You will work collaboratively with clinical staff, patient access, and other administrative departments to ensure seamless billing cycles and superior patient satisfaction. Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and submit clean medical claims to various insurance carriers (commercial, Medicare, Medicaid) using appropriate CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS codes.
  • Review and verify patient demographic information, insurance eligibility, and benefits prior to claim submission.
  • Analyze and interpret Explanation of Benefits (EOBs) to identify denials, underpayments, and discrepancies.
  • Follow up on unpaid claims, investigate reasons for denial, and initiate appeals as necessary.
  • Communicate effectively with insurance companies, patients, and internal departments to resolve billing inquiries and issues.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date billing records, patient accounts, and electronic health records (EHR).
  • Adhere strictly to HIPAA regulations, medical billing compliance guidelines, and organizational policies.
  • Process patient payments, set up payment plans, and manage patient accounts receivable.
  • Identify and report trends in denials and underpayments to management, suggesting process improvements.
  • Stay informed about changes in medical coding, billing regulations, and payer policies.

Required Skills

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in medical billing or a related financial role within a healthcare setting.
  • Proficiency in medical billing software and electronic health record (EHR) systems.
  • Solid understanding of medical terminology, CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS coding.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply payer policies and guidelines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA regulations and patient privacy standards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in Healthcare Administration, Business, or a related field.
  • Professional certification in medical billing (e.g., CPC, CCS-P, CPB from AAPC or AHIMA).
  • Experience with Epic EMR system.
  • Previous experience billing for a large academic medical center or hospital system.
  • Familiarity with Florida-specific insurance carriers and billing practices.
