Job Description

We are seeking a diligent and highly organised Materials Handler to join our dynamic team at South32 Hillside Aluminium in Richards Bay. In this critical role, you will be instrumental in the efficient flow of materials that underpin our world-class aluminium production operations. Your primary responsibility will involve the safe and precise handling, storage, and distribution of raw materials, spare parts, and finished goods within our vast industrial complex. This is more than just a physical role; it requires meticulous attention to detail, adherence to stringent safety protocols, and a proactive approach to inventory management and logistical coordination.

While the core responsibilities involve significant on-site physical handling, this role embraces a hybrid work model. This means you will split your time between hands-on warehouse and yard operations, and remote work dedicated to administrative tasks such as digital inventory reconciliation, data entry into our Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, generating reports, coordinating with suppliers/internal departments via virtual meetings, and optimising material flow strategies. This hybrid approach allows for flexibility and leverages technology to enhance efficiency, providing a balanced work environment. You will ensure the correct materials are in the right place at the right time, preventing operational delays and maintaining the integrity of our supply chain. The ideal candidate will possess a strong commitment to safety, excellent organisational skills, and the ability to operate various material handling equipment. If you thrive in a challenging industrial environment and are passionate about contributing to operational excellence, we encourage you to apply.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely receive, unload, inspect, and accurately store incoming materials and supplies according to established procedures.
  • Issue materials and components to production, maintenance, and other departments as per requisitions, ensuring accuracy and timely delivery.
  • Operate forklifts, overhead cranes, and other material handling equipment safely and efficiently, adhering to all operational guidelines and safety regulations.
  • Perform regular cycle counts and participate in periodic physical inventory counts to ensure high levels of stock accuracy.
  • Maintain accurate digital records of all material movements, receipts, and dispatches using our inventory management and ERP systems (partially performed remotely).
  • Monitor inventory levels, identify potential shortages or overstocks, and communicate findings to relevant stakeholders.
  • Maintain a clean, organised, and safe working environment within the warehouse, laydown areas, and storage yards.
  • Adhere strictly to all company safety, health, environmental, and quality policies and procedures.
  • Assist with the loading of outbound shipments and ensure proper documentation is completed.
  • Participate in team meetings and training sessions, some of which may be conducted virtually to support the hybrid work model.

Required Skills

  • Valid Forklift Operator Certificate (e.g., Code F, F1-F4 or equivalent)
  • Minimum of 2 years' proven experience as a Materials Handler in an industrial or logistics environment.
  • Strong understanding of warehouse operations, inventory control, and safety procedures.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications for data entry and record-keeping.
  • Excellent physical fitness and ability to lift heavy objects and stand for extended periods.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Commitment to maintaining a safe work environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • National Qualification Framework (NQF) Level 2 or 3 in Warehousing, Logistics, or Supply Chain Management.
  • Experience with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, particularly SAP.
  • Prior experience in a heavy industrial, mining, or smelting environment.
  • Additional relevant driver's license (e.g., Code 10/EB).

Perks & Benefits

  • Competitive remuneration package.
  • Comprehensive medical aid benefits.
  • Provident/Pension Fund contributions.
  • Performance-based bonuses.
  • Opportunities for professional development and career growth.
  • Access to employee assistance programmes.
  • A supportive and safety-focused work environment.
