Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Maritime Safety Officer to join our dedicated team in Riga, Latvia. The Maritime Safety Officer will be instrumental in ensuring the highest standards of safety across our fleet and shore-based operations, aligning with national and international maritime regulations, company policies, and best industry practices. This critical role involves developing, implementing, and monitoring safety management systems, conducting regular safety audits and inspections, identifying potential hazards, and mitigating risks to prevent accidents and protect personnel, vessels, and the environment. You will be responsible for fostering a strong safety culture, providing expert guidance on safety protocols, and ensuring all operations adhere to ISO standards and other relevant certifications. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute significantly to the operational integrity and safety excellence of a leading maritime enterprise, working within a dynamic and challenging environment where attention to detail and a proactive mindset are key. The successful candidate will report directly to the Head of Operations and will collaborate closely with various departments, including vessel management, technical, and human resources, to ensure a cohesive and comprehensive approach to safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain the company's Safety Management System (SMS) in compliance with ISM Code and other relevant international and national regulations.
- Conduct regular safety audits, inspections, and risk assessments for vessels and shore-based facilities.
- Investigate incidents, accidents, and near-misses, determining root causes and recommending corrective and preventive actions.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with all applicable maritime safety, health, and environmental regulations.
- Develop and deliver safety training programs for both shore staff and onboard crew members.
- Advise management on safety-related matters and contribute to the continuous improvement of safety practices.
- Ensure proper maintenance and calibration of safety equipment across the fleet.
- Prepare comprehensive safety reports and present findings to senior management.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for external safety audits and regulatory inspections.
- Promote a proactive safety culture through communication, engagement, and leadership.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in a maritime safety role or a related position onboard vessels.
- In-depth knowledge of ISM Code, SOLAS, MARPOL, MLC, and other international maritime safety regulations.
- Proven experience in conducting safety audits, inspections, and risk assessments.
- Excellent analytical skills with the ability to investigate incidents and determine root causes.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of influencing and training personnel at all levels.
- Proficiency in English (written and spoken); knowledge of Latvian is an advantage.
- Competency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Preferred Qualifications
- Master Mariner or Chief Engineer qualification.
- Relevant maritime safety certifications (e.g., Lead Auditor for ISM/ISO, NEBOSH General Certificate).
- Experience with tanker operations and specific safety requirements.
- Familiarity with environmental management systems (e.g., ISO 14001).
- Experience working with various vessel types and Flag State requirements.
