Key Responsibilities
- Plan, design, and execute marine ecological surveys, including biodiversity assessments, habitat mapping, and population studies of marine flora and fauna.
- Collect, process, and analyze marine samples (e.g., water, sediment, plankton, fish, benthic invertebrates) using standard scientific protocols and advanced laboratory techniques.
- Conduct extensive fieldwork in diverse marine environments, often involving boat operations, SCUBA diving, and extended periods in remote coastal or offshore locations.
- Analyze complex biological and environmental data using appropriate statistical software (e.g., R, SPSS, SAS) and contribute to the interpretation of research findings.
- Prepare high-quality scientific reports, peer-reviewed publications, and engaging presentations for both scientific conferences and public outreach initiatives.
- Participate actively in stakeholder engagement activities, community outreach programs, and capacity building initiatives related to marine conservation and fisheries management.
- Assist in the development of compelling research proposals, seek grant funding opportunities, and manage project budgets efficiently and transparently.
- Ensure strict compliance with all institutional safety regulations, ethical guidelines, and environmental protocols during all research and fieldwork activities.
Required Skills
- Proven expertise in marine biological research methodologies, including experimental design, sampling techniques, and data collection protocols.
- Proficiency in statistical analysis software (e.g., R, SPSS, SAS) and data visualization tools for interpreting complex datasets.
- Demonstrable experience with fieldwork in marine environments, with preference for candidates holding a valid SCUBA diving certification (PADI Advanced Open Water or equivalent).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for effective scientific reporting, proposal writing, and engaging with diverse stakeholders.
- Strong organizational skills, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple research projects simultaneously.

Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Marine Biology, Fisheries Science, Oceanography, or a closely related discipline.
- At least 3 years of progressive professional experience in marine research, conservation, or environmental management, ideally within the East African region.
- Demonstrated experience in grant writing and successful project funding acquisition.
- Proficiency in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) for mapping and spatial analysis of marine data.
- Experience with advanced laboratory techniques such as molecular diagnostics, histology, or chemical analysis of marine samples.
- Ability to operate and maintain specialized marine research equipment (e.g., ROVs, AUVs, oceanographic sensors, specialized sampling gear).
