Job Description
Are you an experienced and highly skilled Maintenance Electrician looking for a challenging opportunity within a leading automotive manufacturing environment? Volkswagen Group South Africa is seeking a dedicated and proactive Maintenance Electrician to join our dynamic team in Kariega, Eastern Cape. In this crucial role, you will be responsible for ensuring the optimal functionality and reliability of our extensive electrical systems and equipment across the plant. You will be instrumental in preventing downtime, executing preventative maintenance, and responding promptly to electrical breakdowns, contributing directly to our production efficiency and product quality. Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine preventative maintenance on all electrical systems, machinery, and equipment according to schedules to ensure maximum operational efficiency.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair complex electrical faults in production machinery, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), robotic systems, motor control circuits, and industrial control panels.
- Install, test, and commission new electrical equipment and wiring systems in compliance with relevant safety and industry standards, including the OHS Act.
- Conduct thorough electrical safety inspections and ensure all work adheres strictly to occupational health and safety regulations.
- Read and accurately interpret electrical schematics, blueprints, and technical diagrams to facilitate efficient repairs, modifications, and new installations.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of all maintenance activities, repairs, and inspections using our Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
- Collaborate effectively with engineering, production, and other maintenance teams to optimize equipment performance, implement upgrades, and minimize unplanned downtime.
- Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in electrical systems, processes, and energy efficiency, proposing and implementing solutions.
- Respond promptly to emergency breakdowns and execute effective corrective actions to restore operations quickly and safely.
- Assist in training junior technicians and share valuable technical knowledge and best practices within the maintenance team to foster skill development.
Required Skills
- Valid Section 13 Electrician Trade Test Certificate (or equivalent NQF Level 4 qualification).
- Minimum of 4 years of proven experience as a Maintenance Electrician in a heavy industrial or manufacturing environment, preferably automotive.
- Strong understanding of PLC logic (e.g., Siemens, Allen-Bradley), Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), and servo drives.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and repair complex electrical systems and components.
- Solid knowledge of industrial electrical safety procedures and regulations, including Lockout/Tagout.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and a methodical, analytical approach to fault finding.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, for technical reporting and collaboration.
Preferred Qualifications
- N6 National Diploma in Electrical Engineering or equivalent higher education.
- Experience with robotic systems (e.g., KUKA, ABB, Fanuc) and their electrical integration.
- Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) such as SAP PM.
- Basic mechanical aptitude for integrated electro-mechanical systems.
- Certification in specialized safety standards or advanced electrical techniques.
