Job Description
Crossroads Distribution is actively seeking dedicated and experienced Long Distance Heavy Duty Truck Drivers to join our dynamic team based out of our Richards Bay depot. This critical role involves the safe and timely transportation of goods across long-distance routes throughout South Africa, playing a vital part in our national distribution network. As a Long Distance Heavy Duty Truck Driver, you will be responsible for operating various heavy-duty vehicles, ensuring all deliveries are made in accordance with schedules and company standards, and adhering strictly to all road safety regulations and transport laws. This position requires a high degree of responsibility, self-management, and the ability to work independently for extended periods. Key Responsibilities
- Operate heavy-duty vehicles (e.g., articulated trucks, super-links) safely and efficiently over long distances.
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles and trailers to ensure roadworthiness and compliance with safety standards.
- Load and unload cargo as required, ensuring proper securement to prevent damage during transit.
- Adhere strictly to all traffic laws, company safety policies, and national transport regulations (e.g., hours of service, weight limits).
- Maintain accurate logbooks, delivery manifests, fuel consumption records, and other required documentation.
- Communicate effectively with dispatch, clients, and fellow team members regarding delivery schedules, delays, or any operational issues.
- Ensure timely delivery of goods to designated locations, meeting specified deadlines.
- Represent Crossroads Distribution professionally at all times when interacting with clients, colleagues, and the public.
- Report any vehicle defects, accidents, incidents, or route deviations promptly.
- Manage fuel efficiency and perform minor roadside repairs if necessary.
- Ensure the cleanliness and presentability of the vehicle.
Required Skills
- Valid Code EC (or equivalent) Driver's License with a Public Driving Permit (PrDP – Goods).
- Minimum of 4 years verifiable experience as a long-distance heavy-duty truck driver.
- Proven track record of safe driving with no major accidents or traffic violations.
- Sound knowledge of national traffic laws and transport regulations.
- Ability to perform basic vehicle inspections and identify potential mechanical issues.
- Excellent defensive driving skills and road safety awareness.
- Good physical condition and stamina to handle long hours of driving and manual tasks.
- Strong communication skills (verbal and written) in English.
- Reliability, punctuality, and a strong sense of responsibility.
- Ability to read maps, use GPS devices, and plan efficient routes.
Preferred Qualifications
- Matric certificate or equivalent qualification.
- Experience with various types of cargo (e.g., hazardous materials, perishables).
- Basic mechanical knowledge for troubleshooting minor vehicle issues.
- Familiarity with tracking systems and electronic log devices.
- Valid First Aid and Fire Fighting certificates.
