Career.supersecrets is excited to partner with a prominent educational institution in Nsukka, Enugu, to recruit a dedicated and meticulous Library Assistant specializing in shelving. As a Library Assistant (Shelving), you will be the backbone of the library’s physical organization, directly impacting the ability of students, researchers, and community members to locate the resources they need. This role is fundamental to preserving the integrity of the library’s extensive collection and ensuring its daily functionality.
Key Responsibilities
- Accurately sort, shelve, and re-shelve library materials (books, periodicals, media, etc.) according to established classification systems (e.g., Library of Congress, Dewey Decimal).
- Perform shelf-reading to ensure materials are in correct order and identify misplaced items.
- Shift and relocate collections as needed to accommodate growth or reorganization initiatives.
- Assist in maintaining the general neatness and tidiness of the library stacks and public areas.
- Inspect materials for damage and report any issues to supervisory staff.
- Retrieve materials from various locations within the library for specific requests or inter-library loans.
- Provide basic directional assistance to patrons regarding library layout and material locations.
- Adhere to all library policies and procedures, including safety guidelines.
Required Skills
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to accurately follow instructions and established shelving guidelines.
- Physical stamina to stand, walk, bend, lift (up to 25 lbs), and push book carts for extended periods.
- Basic literacy and numerical skills.
- Reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Good communication skills (verbal).
- Respect for library materials and patrons.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience working in a library or a similar organizational role.
- Familiarity with library classification systems (e.g., Dewey Decimal, Library of Congress).
- A minimum of an SSCE/WAEC certificate.
- Knowledge of basic computer operations.
- Interest in literature, research, or information management.
