Job Description

This is a fantastic entry-level opportunity designed for individuals with no prior experience in a library setting. We are seeking someone who is passionate about books, information, and helping people, and who is eager to learn the ropes of library operations. You will play a crucial role in maintaining the welcoming and organized atmosphere of the library, assisting patrons, and ensuring resources are readily available. This position offers flexible hours, making it ideal for students, parents, or anyone looking for a meaningful part-time role that makes a real difference. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist library patrons with basic enquiries, locating resources, and using library facilities.
  • Shelve, re-shelve, and tidy books, periodicals, and other library materials accurately.
  • Maintain the general orderliness and appearance of the library, including reading areas and display shelves.
  • Process new library materials under supervision, including stamping and labelling.
  • Support library events and programs by assisting with setup, registration, and general organisation.
  • Perform basic administrative tasks, such as answering phones and checking emails.
  • Assist with opening and closing procedures, ensuring the library is ready for patrons or secured for the night.
  • Handle inter-library loan requests and reservations as directed.
  • Adhere to all library policies and procedures, including health and safety guidelines.

Required Skills

  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational abilities and attention to detail.
  • A friendly, approachable, and helpful demeanor.
  • Reliability and punctuality.
  • Basic computer literacy (e.g., using email, internet browsing).
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • A genuine willingness to learn and adapt to new tasks.
  • Physical ability to lift and move books, and stand/walk for periods.

Preferred Qualifications

  • GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics.
  • Previous experience in a customer service role (informal or formal).
  • An expressed interest in books, reading, and community engagement.
  • Familiarity with the Norwich local area and its community resources.
