Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Professional Librarian to join our dedicated team within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Libraries. This pivotal role involves contributing to the development and delivery of comprehensive library services that meet the diverse needs of our community members in Chelsea. The successful candidate will be instrumental in curating our collections, facilitating access to information, and developing engaging programmes that promote literacy, digital skills, and cultural appreciation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and develop specific subject areas of the library's physical and digital collections, including selection, acquisition, cataloguing, and weeding, ensuring relevance, diversity, and accessibility.
  • Provide expert reference and information services, assisting patrons with research, navigating complex resources, and utilizing library technology effectively.
  • Plan, promote, and deliver engaging cultural, educational, and literacy-focused programmes and events for diverse age groups, including workshops, author talks, reading clubs, and digital skills sessions.
  • Promote digital literacy and assist users with online resources, e-books, e-journals, databases, and public access computers, bridging the digital divide.
  • Act as a frontline point of contact, providing high-quality customer service, answering enquiries, and resolving issues effectively and courteously, ensuring a positive user experience.
  • Collaborate with local schools, community groups, charitable organisations, and other borough departments to extend the library's reach and impact, fostering strong community partnerships.
  • Contribute to the implementation of library policies, procedures, and strategic initiatives, ensuring compliance and continuous improvement of services.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of library trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in information science and public service.
  • Mentor and support junior library staff, volunteers, and interns as required, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development.

Required Skills

  • Master's degree in Library and Information Science (or equivalent professional qualification) from an accredited institution.
  • Proven experience (minimum 2 years) in a professional librarian role within a public or academic library setting.
  • Excellent knowledge of library classification systems (e.g., Dewey Decimal Classification, Library of Congress) and professional cataloguing principles.
  • Strong understanding of digital library resources, online databases, information retrieval systems, and content management platforms.
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills with the ability to engage diverse audiences.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and deliver engaging community programmes and events from conception to evaluation.
  • Proficiency in using integrated library management systems (LMS) and standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative, dynamic team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with collection development policies, budget management, and materials selection processes for diverse collections.
  • Familiarity with marketing and promotional strategies for library services, including social media engagement.
  • Knowledge of current trends in digital literacy education, information technology, and community outreach.
  • Experience working with diverse community groups and addressing varied needs, including those with special access requirements.
  • Membership of a professional library association (e.g., CILIP) and commitment to ongoing professional development.
