Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Librarian to join our esteemed team at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) in Nnewi. This pivotal role involves managing, organizing, and disseminating critical medical and health-related information to our diverse user base, which includes medical doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, researchers, students, and faculty. The ideal candidate will be instrumental in ensuring that our library’s resources, both physical and digital, are accessible, relevant, and effectively utilized to support patient care, clinical research, medical education, and professional development.

As our Librarian, you will not only maintain the existing collection but also actively engage in developing new collections that align with the evolving needs of our medical community. This includes the acquisition, cataloging, and classification of books, journals, databases, and other multimedia resources. You will play a key role in providing comprehensive reference services, assisting users with complex information retrieval tasks, and conducting literature searches. A significant part of this role involves leveraging digital platforms, managing electronic resources, and promoting digital literacy among our users. You will be expected to organize and lead training sessions on library usage, research methodologies, and effective database searching. Furthermore, you will contribute to the preservation of valuable medical literature, ensuring the longevity and integrity of our resources. Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and organize the hospital's library collection, including books, journals, electronic databases, and multimedia resources.
  • Provide comprehensive reference and information retrieval services to medical staff, students, and researchers.
  • Conduct literature searches and assist users with research methodologies and evidence-based practice inquiries.
  • Catalog and classify new acquisitions using appropriate library standards (e.g., MARC, NLM classification).
  • Oversee the management and accessibility of electronic resources, ensuring seamless user experience.
  • Develop and deliver training programs on library resources, research tools, and information literacy.
  • Participate in collection development, including selecting and acquiring new materials relevant to medical sciences and healthcare.
  • Maintain awareness of current trends in medical librarianship, information technology, and healthcare education.
  • Assist in the preservation and conservation of library materials.
  • Generate reports on library usage, resource availability, and user feedback to inform service improvements.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Library and Information Science or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of professional experience as a Librarian, preferably in an academic or medical library setting.
  • Proficiency in library management systems and cataloging software.
  • Strong research and information retrieval skills, including familiarity with medical databases (e.g., PubMed, Scopus).
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • High level of IT literacy and ability to manage digital resources.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Library and Information Science (MLS/MLIS).
  • Experience with NLM classification and MeSH indexing.
  • Familiarity with open-access resources and institutional repositories.
  • Prior experience in a teaching hospital or university library.
  • Knowledge of current trends in e-learning and digital library services.
