Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide professional library services, including reference, readers’ advisory, and information literacy instruction to patrons of all ages.
  • Develop, plan, and deliver engaging programs and events for diverse community groups, including children, teens, and adults.
  • Manage and maintain a specific collection area, including selection, deselection, and assessment of materials to meet community needs.
  • Assist patrons with accessing library resources, technology, and digital services, including e-books, databases, and online platforms.
  • Participate in outreach activities to promote library services and build relationships within the Saanich community.
  • Collaborate with colleagues on system-wide initiatives, projects, and committees to enhance library operations and services.
  • Stay current with trends in librarianship, information technology, and community needs to inform service development.
  • Contribute to a welcoming, inclusive, and equitable environment for all patrons and staff.
  • Resolve patron inquiries and issues efficiently and courteously, upholding library policies and procedures.

Required Skills

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current library practices, trends, and emerging technologies.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong customer service orientation with a proven ability to interact effectively with diverse populations.
  • Proficiency in utilizing library management systems and digital resources.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Experience in program planning and delivery for various age groups.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working in a public library setting.
  • Experience with collection development and management.
  • Familiarity with the Saanich community and its demographics.
  • Bilingualism (English and French) or proficiency in other languages relevant to the community.
