Career.supersecrets is actively seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Legal Officer to join a prominent government institution in Bauchi, Bauchi State. The successful candidate will be instrumental in providing expert legal advice, drafting critical legal documents, and representing the institution in various legal proceedings. You will navigate complex legal landscapes, advise on critical governance issues, and help ensure the institution’s operations align perfectly with national laws and regulations. Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive legal advice and opinions on matters relating to the institution's operations, policies, and regulatory compliance.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate various legal documents, contracts, agreements, memoranda of understanding, and legislative instruments.
  • Represent the institution in litigation, arbitration, mediation, and other dispute resolution forums, both as plaintiff and defendant.
  • Conduct thorough legal research and analysis on relevant statutes, case law, and regulations to support institutional objectives.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of institutional policies and procedures to ensure adherence to legal requirements.
  • Monitor changes in legislation and regulatory frameworks relevant to the government sector and advise the institution on potential impacts.
  • Liaise with external legal counsel, government agencies, and other stakeholders as necessary.
  • Prepare periodic legal reports, briefs, and presentations for management and other relevant parties.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
  • Handle official correspondence and manage legal documentation and records effectively.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from a recognized university.
  • Called to the Nigerian Bar with a valid practicing certificate.
  • Minimum of 3 years post-call experience in legal practice, preferably within a government agency, parastatal, or a law firm specializing in public law.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of Nigerian public law, administrative law, constitutional law, and regulatory compliance.
  • Excellent legal research, drafting, and analytical skills.
  • Strong advocacy and negotiation abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • High level of integrity, ethical conduct, and professionalism.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master of Laws (LL.M) degree or other relevant postgraduate qualifications.
  • Experience in specific areas such as procurement law, environmental law, or human rights law.
  • Membership in relevant professional legal associations.
  • Fluency in Hausa or other local languages relevant to Bauchi State.
  • Proven track record of managing complex legal cases and providing strategic legal counsel.
