Job Description

Riverside Garden Centre is seeking a skilled and enthusiastic Landscape Gardener to join our growing team in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire. As a Landscape Gardener, you will be instrumental in designing, creating, and maintaining beautiful landscapes for our diverse clientele, ranging from intimate residential gardens to expansive commercial properties. You will work with a variety of plant materials, hardscaping elements, and garden features, ensuring every project meets our high standards of quality and aesthetic appeal. Your role will involve everything from initial site preparation and planting to advanced pruning, irrigation system installation, and ongoing garden care. We’re looking for someone who is not only proficient with a wide range of gardening tools and machinery but also possesses excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively with clients, understand their vision, and work seamlessly with other team members. Key Responsibilities

  • Planning, designing, and executing landscape projects based on client specifications and horticultural best practices.
  • Preparing garden sites, including soil cultivation, grading, and installation of drainage systems.
  • Planting a wide variety of trees, shrubs, flowers, and ground cover, ensuring proper placement, health, and aesthetic appeal.
  • Constructing hardscaping features such as patios, pathways, retaining walls, and water features, adhering to safety standards.
  • Performing ongoing garden maintenance, including precision pruning, thorough weeding, mulching, fertilising, and proactive pest and disease control.
  • Operating and maintaining various landscaping equipment and tools safely and effectively, ensuring their longevity and readiness.
  • Providing expert advice and guidance to clients on garden care, plant selection, and sustainable landscape improvements.
  • Collaborating effectively with other team members, suppliers, and clients to ensure efficient project completion and high-quality results.

Required Skills

  • Proven practical experience in landscape design, installation, and ongoing maintenance.
  • Strong foundational knowledge of horticulture, plant identification, and soil science principles.
  • Proficiency in operating a range of garden machinery (e.g., mowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers, rotavators, chainsaws).
  • Ability to accurately read and interpret landscape plans, drawings, and schematics.
  • Excellent physical stamina and the ability to work outdoors consistently in various weather conditions.
  • Strong attention to detail and a steadfast commitment to high-quality workmanship.
  • Effective verbal communication and interpersonal skills for client and team interaction.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Horticulture, Landscaping, Amenity Horticulture, or a closely related field.
  • Full UK driving license with a clean record; a towing endorsement (BE) is highly advantageous for transporting equipment.
  • Demonstrable experience with irrigation system installation, maintenance, and fault finding.
  • Familiarity with local plant species and their suitability for the Lincolnshire climate and soil types.
  • Valid CSCS card or other relevant health and safety certification for construction environments.
