Key Responsibilities
- Receive, log, and process patient samples (blood, urine, tissue, etc.) accurately and efficiently.
- Prepare specimens for analysis according to established protocols, including aliquoting, centrifuging, and labeling.
- Maintain laboratory equipment by performing routine cleaning, calibration checks, and basic troubleshooting under supervision.
- Assist Medical Laboratory Scientists with basic tests and procedures as instructed.
- Manage and maintain adequate inventory of laboratory supplies and reagents, noting expiration dates and reorder points.
- Ensure strict adherence to safety guidelines, quality control measures, and infection prevention protocols.
- Accurately enter patient data and test results into laboratory information systems (LIS).
- Prepare and sterilize glassware and other laboratory apparatus.
- Dispose of biohazardous waste safely and in compliance with hospital policies.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient working environment in the laboratory.
- Support administrative tasks such as filing, record-keeping, and answering phone calls.
Required Skills
- Minimum of an SSCE/WASSCE, or OND in Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) or a related scientific field.
- Basic understanding of laboratory procedures and safety protocols.
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to follow instructions meticulously and work independently when required.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- A strong work ethic and a desire to learn and grow within the healthcare sector.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous volunteer experience or internship in a hospital or laboratory setting.
