Key Responsibilities

  • Receive, label, and process patient samples (e.g., blood, urine, swabs) accurately and efficiently according to standard operating procedures.
  • Prepare samples for various laboratory tests, including centrifugation, aliquoting, and distribution to appropriate testing sections.
  • Maintain inventory of laboratory supplies, reagents, and consumables, notifying senior staff of stock levels and potential shortages.
  • Clean, sterilize, and disinfect laboratory equipment, glassware, and work areas to ensure a sterile and safe environment.
  • Assist with basic equipment maintenance and calibration tasks under the direct supervision of qualified personnel.
  • Safely dispose of biohazardous waste in strict accordance with established health and safety regulations.
  • Accurately record data, maintain detailed logs of samples received, processed, and any procedures performed.
  • Adhere strictly to all national health, safety, and quality assurance guidelines and policies.
  • Provide support to qualified laboratory technologists and scientists as required, ensuring smooth workflow.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all patient information and sensitive laboratory data.
  • Report any anomalies, equipment malfunctions, or safety concerns to senior laboratory staff promptly and clearly.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent (Grade 12/Matric Certificate).
  • Basic understanding of scientific principles and concepts.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a high level of accuracy in all tasks.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow written and verbal instructions precisely.
  • Basic computer literacy, including proficiency in using MS Office suite (Word, Excel).
  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a valuable team member.
  • Physical ability to stand for extended periods, perform repetitive tasks, and lift moderate weights (up to 10 kg).

Preferred Qualifications

  • A certificate or diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology, Biotechnology, or a closely related scientific field.
  • Previous experience (even volunteer or shadowing) in a laboratory, healthcare, or clinical setting.
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Familiarity with laboratory safety procedures and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • A valid South African Driver's license (Code B/08) may be beneficial for local errands or sample transport.
