Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Industrial Safety Officer to join our dynamic team in Maputo, Mozambique. This pivotal role is essential for upholding Vale Mozambique’s unwavering commitment to health, safety, and environmental excellence across our operational sites. The Industrial Safety Officer will be responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring robust safety programs and procedures that comply with both national regulations and Vale’s rigorous internal standards. You will play a crucial role in minimizing workplace hazards, preventing accidents, and fostering a proactive safety culture among all personnel. This position requires a professional with a strong understanding of industrial safety principles, risk management, and incident investigation. You will be a key advisor to management and site teams, ensuring that safety is integrated into every aspect of our operations, from daily tasks to major projects. Your ability to conduct thorough inspections, deliver engaging training, and respond effectively to safety-related issues will be critical. The ideal candidate will be a proactive problem-solver, an excellent communicator, and a dedicated advocate for safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and monitor safety programs, policies, and procedures in line with national regulations (e.g., Mozambican labour laws, environmental regulations) and Vale’s global safety standards.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments across all operational sites to identify potential hazards and recommend corrective actions.
  • Investigate incidents, accidents, and near-misses thoroughly, determine root causes, and develop preventative measures to avoid recurrence.
  • Provide comprehensive safety training and induction programs for employees, contractors, and visitors, ensuring awareness of risks and safe work practices.
  • Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, training, and compliance activities.
  • Advise management and project teams on best practices for industrial safety, hazard control, and emergency preparedness.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant health, safety, and environmental legislation and company policies.
  • Promote a strong safety culture through regular communication, awareness campaigns, and employee engagement initiatives.
  • Prepare and present regular safety performance reports to management.
  • Participate in emergency response planning and drills.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as an Industrial Safety Officer or similar role in a heavy industry or mining environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of occupational health and safety (OSH) regulations and standards (e.g., ISO 45001).
  • Strong understanding of risk assessment, hazard identification, and control measures.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with fluency in both Portuguese and English.
  • Ability to conduct thorough incident investigations and root cause analysis.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
  • Internationally recognized safety certifications (e.g., NEBOSH, OSHA, IOSH).
  • Experience working in a multinational company environment.
  • Knowledge of Mozambican mining and environmental legislation.
