Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Hydropower Plant Technician to join our critical operations and maintenance team, primarily based in Maputo, Mozambique, with potential assignments at our plant facilities. This role offers an exciting and impactful opportunity to contribute directly to the efficient and reliable operation of a major national energy asset, playing a vital part in the country’s power supply and regional energy stability. The successful Hydropower Plant Technician will be responsible for the comprehensive inspection, meticulous maintenance, advanced troubleshooting, and timely repair of complex mechanical, electrical, and control systems throughout our hydropower generation facilities. Your expertise will be crucial in ensuring the continuous availability and optimal performance of all plant equipment, strictly adhering to stringent safety regulations, environmental protection standards, and established operational procedures. This demanding role requires a proactive and resourceful individual with a profound understanding of industrial plant mechanics, including hydraulics, pneumatics, and rotating machinery, alongside robust knowledge of electrical systems, instrumentation, and automation. You must be capable of working both independently on specialized tasks and collaboratively as an integral part of a multidisciplinary team. You will be instrumental in executing planned preventive maintenance (PPM) schedules, swiftly responding to corrective maintenance requests, and actively supporting system upgrades and modernization initiatives aimed at enhancing overall plant efficiency, reliability, and longevity. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine inspection, maintenance, and repair of mechanical and electrical equipment in the hydropower plant, including turbines, generators, transformers, switchgear, control systems, and associated auxiliaries.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot equipment malfunctions, identifying root causes and implementing effective corrective actions to minimize downtime and ensure operational continuity.
  • Execute planned preventive maintenance (PPM) schedules and procedures to ensure optimal equipment performance, reliability, and compliance with manufacturer specifications.
  • Monitor plant operational parameters, interpret complex data from various sensors and systems, and adjust settings as needed to maintain efficiency and output targets.
  • Install, test, and commission new equipment and systems, ensuring seamless integration with existing plant infrastructure and operational protocols.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all maintenance activities, equipment status, parts inventory, and work orders using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
  • Adhere strictly to all safety protocols, environmental regulations, and company policies, actively promoting a culture of safety and hazard awareness among colleagues and contractors.
  • Collaborate effectively with engineers, operators, and other technicians to optimize plant operations, resolve complex technical issues, and improve overall system reliability.
  • Participate in emergency response procedures, including fault isolation and recovery, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives for plant performance and safety.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and on-the-job training to junior technicians or new team members as required, fostering skill development within the team.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience (minimum 4 years) as a Hydropower Plant Technician or similar role in heavy industrial settings, such as power generation, large-scale manufacturing, or oil & gas.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, including hydraulics, pneumatics, rotating machinery, and static equipment.
  • Proficiency in electrical troubleshooting, motor controls, power distribution, and industrial wiring.
  • Ability to accurately read and interpret complex technical drawings, schematics, Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), and operational manuals.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with industrial safety standards and procedures (e.g., LOTO, confined space entry, working at heights) in a high-risk environment.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, analytical thinking, and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively as a vital part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Physical fitness and capability to perform duties in a demanding industrial environment, which may include working at heights, in confined spaces, and exposure to varying weather conditions.
  • Fluency in Portuguese (verbal and written) and a working knowledge of English is essential for documentation and communication.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Technical Diploma or Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Hands-on experience with SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems and programmable logic controllers (PLCs) for plant automation.
  • Relevant certifications in specific industrial maintenance areas, such as vibration analysis, thermography, or alignment techniques.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of environmental regulations and best practices pertaining to hydropower operations and water resource management.
  • Prior experience working in a multicultural team environment within a large-scale industrial operation.
