Job Description
HCB is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Hydroelectric Power Plant Operator to join our dynamic team at the Cahora Bassa Dam complex. In this pivotal role, you will be at the forefront of our energy production, directly contributing to the reliable and efficient operation of one of Africa’s most vital power generation facilities. As a Hydroelectric Power Plant Operator, you will be responsible for the continuous monitoring, control, and optimization of generating units, ancillary equipment, and grid systems. This is an on-site position requiring a commitment to shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays, to ensure continuous power supply. You will work within a highly regulated environment, adhering to stringent safety protocols and operational procedures to maintain peak performance and prevent potential disruptions. Your expertise will be crucial in responding to operational changes, executing start-up and shut-down procedures, and conducting routine inspections to identify and resolve issues promptly.

Key Responsibilities
- Operate and monitor hydroelectric power generation units, turbines, generators, and associated auxiliary equipment from a central control room.
- Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance on plant equipment, identifying and reporting any abnormalities or potential hazards.
- Execute start-up, shut-down, and emergency procedures for generating units in accordance with established protocols.
- Monitor and control water levels, flow rates, and pressure to optimize power generation and ensure dam safety.
- Respond promptly and effectively to alarms, system disturbances, and emergency situations, taking corrective actions as required.
- Maintain accurate operational logs, records, and reports, documenting all plant activities, events, and maintenance actions.
- Collaborate with maintenance, engineering, and transmission control center teams to coordinate outages, equipment repairs, and system tests.
- Ensure strict adherence to all safety regulations, environmental policies, and operational procedures.
- Conduct equipment performance checks and adjust parameters to maintain optimal efficiency and reliability.
- Participate in training programs to enhance operational knowledge and skills, staying current with industry best practices.
Required Skills
- Proven experience (minimum 3 years) in the operation of hydroelectric power plants or similar heavy industrial plant environments.
- Strong understanding of electrical and mechanical principles, hydraulics, and control systems.
- Ability to read and interpret technical diagrams, blueprints, and operational manuals.
- Proficiency in operating SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems and other control room interfaces.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to make critical decisions under pressure.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, for reporting and team collaboration.
- Commitment to safety protocols and environmental regulations.
- Physical ability to perform duties, including working in various weather conditions and confined spaces, and lifting heavy objects.
- Willingness to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications
- Technical Diploma or Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Power Generation, or a related field.
- Certification in power plant operations from a recognized institution.
- Experience with high-voltage switchgear operations and protection systems.
- Knowledge of Mozambican energy grid regulations and operational standards.
- Fluency in Portuguese (official language of Mozambique) is highly advantageous.
