Are you a highly skilled and dedicated Heavy Vehicle Mechanic seeking a challenging and rewarding career opportunity in the heart of Aberdeen? First Bus Aberdeen is looking for an experienced and proactive individual to join our dynamic engineering team at our busy King Street depot. As a Heavy Vehicle Mechanic with First Bus Aberdeen, you will be instrumental in maintaining our diverse fleet, which includes a range of diesel and hybrid buses. Your expertise will be crucial in performing a wide array of duties, from routine preventative maintenance and statutory inspections to complex diagnostics and major component overhauls. You will be responsible for a varied workload, ensuring every vehicle meets rigorous safety and operational standards before it hits the road. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine servicing, preventative maintenance, and statutory inspections on a diverse fleet of heavy vehicles (PSVs).
  • Diagnose and rectify complex mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic faults using advanced diagnostic tools and techniques.
  • Perform major component overhauls and repairs on engines, transmissions, braking systems, steering, and chassis.
  • Carry out vehicle safety checks, road tests, and ensure all vehicles meet DVSA standards.
  • Maintain accurate records of all maintenance and repair work performed, including parts used and labour expended.
  • Adhere strictly to all health and safety regulations and company procedures, promoting a safe working environment.
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues, supervisors, and other departments to ensure efficient workshop operations.
  • Participate in ongoing training and development programs to stay updated with new vehicle technologies and industry best practices.
  • Assist in mentoring and guiding apprentices or less experienced mechanics.
  • Ensure the workshop area is kept clean, tidy, and organised.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a Heavy Vehicle Mechanic or PSV Technician.
  • NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair.
  • Strong diagnostic skills across mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Proficiency in using various diagnostic software and equipment.
  • Experience with preventative maintenance schedules and statutory vehicle inspections.
  • Excellent fault-finding and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and wiring diagrams.
  • Full UK Driving Licence with categories D/D1 (or willingness to obtain).
  • Strong commitment to health and safety practices.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant manufacturer-specific training certifications.
  • Additional HGV/PSV driving licence categories.
  • Experience with hybrid or electric vehicle systems.
  • Welding and fabrication experience.
  • Previous experience working within a public transport environment.
