Key Responsibilities
- Conduct regular site inspections and audits to identify potential hazards, non-compliance issues, and areas for improvement in health and safety practices within the industrial estate.
- Develop, implement, and enforce robust Health & Safety policies, procedures, and systems in line with national legislation (e.g., Factories Act, Labour Act) and international standards (e.g., ISO 45001).
- Investigate all incidents, accidents, and near-misses, determining root causes, and recommending corrective and preventive actions to avoid recurrence.
- Organize and deliver comprehensive health and safety training programs for employees at all levels, ensuring awareness and competence in safety protocols.
- Perform detailed risk assessments for all operational activities, machinery, and processes, and implement effective control measures.
- Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, training, and compliance documentation for reporting and audit purposes.
- Advise management on health and safety matters, including the selection of personal protective equipment (PPE), safe work procedures, and new regulatory requirements.
- Lead emergency response planning and drills, including fire safety, first aid, and evacuation procedures, ensuring preparedness.
- Liaise effectively with external regulatory bodies during inspections and audits, ensuring all requirements are met and maintaining positive relationships.
- Promote a positive safety culture through continuous communication, awareness campaigns, and active employee engagement initiatives.
- Stay updated with new health and safety legislation, industry best practices, and technological advancements to ensure continuous improvement in safety management systems.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Health & Safety Officer in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
- In-depth knowledge of Nigerian occupational health and safety legislation and regulations.
- Strong understanding of international safety standards (e.g., ISO 45001).
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in conducting risk assessments and incident investigations.
- Ability to develop and deliver effective safety training programs.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office Suite.
- First Aid and Fire Safety certification.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Professional certification such as NEBOSH General Certificate, IOSH Managing Safely, or equivalent.
- Experience working with diverse industrial processes (e.g., manufacturing, logistics, heavy machinery).
- Project management experience related to safety initiatives.
- Ability to speak multiple local languages.
