Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Health & Safety Officer to oversee and enhance safety protocols within a bustling industrial estate in Mararaba, Abuja. This pivotal role involves ensuring a secure working environment for all personnel by identifying potential hazards, implementing preventative measures, and fostering a strong safety culture across multiple businesses and operations within the estate. The successful candidate will be a proactive professional, adept at navigating complex industrial landscapes, interpreting regulatory frameworks, and driving continuous improvement in occupational health and safety standards. You will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring safety policies and procedures that comply with local and national regulations, as well as international best practices. This position requires a keen eye for detail, excellent communication skills to engage with diverse stakeholders, and the ability to respond effectively to emergency situations. You will lead safety training initiatives, conduct regular inspections, investigate incidents, and meticulously document all safety-related activities. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and monitor occupational health and safety programs and policies in alignment with local regulations and international standards.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections and risk assessments across various industrial units within the estate to identify hazards and recommend corrective actions.
  • Investigate all incidents, accidents, and near misses, determine root causes, and implement preventive measures to avoid recurrence.
  • Organize and deliver comprehensive health and safety training sessions for staff, contractors, and visitors on topics such as emergency procedures, safe work practices, and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ensure strict compliance with all relevant health, safety, and environmental legislation and corporate requirements.
  • Maintain detailed records of safety inspections, incident reports, training activities, and safety audit findings.
  • Advise management on safety-related issues, providing expert guidance on best practices and emerging risks.
  • Manage the implementation and maintenance of emergency preparedness plans, including fire safety, first aid, and evacuation procedures.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture through awareness campaigns, safety committees, and regular communication.
  • Oversee waste management and environmental compliance within the industrial estate.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a Health & Safety Officer in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of Nigerian occupational health and safety regulations (e.g., Factories Act, NSITF Act).
  • Strong understanding of risk assessment methodologies and hazard identification.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to conduct thorough incident investigations and root cause analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver engaging safety training programs.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Safety, Industrial Safety, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Recognized professional certifications such as NEBOSH (IGC), IOSH, OSHA, or equivalent.
  • First Aid and Fire Safety certification.
  • Experience with ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems).
  • Knowledge of environmental management systems (e.g., ISO 14001).
