Job Description

Career.supersecrets is seeking an experienced and dedicated Health & Safety Officer to join our client’s team within a prominent industrial estate in Jabi Lake Mall, Abuja. This pivotal role involves overseeing and ensuring the highest standards of health, safety, and environmental compliance across industrial operations. As a professional H&S Officer, you will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring safety programs, policies, and procedures to prevent accidents, minimize risks, and promote a culture of safety awareness among all employees and contractors. You will conduct regular site inspections, risk assessments, and safety audits, providing actionable recommendations for improvements. This position requires a proactive individual with a strong understanding of Nigerian and international H&S regulations, coupled with the ability to effectively communicate and enforce safety guidelines. You will be responsible for investigating incidents, preparing detailed reports, and leading initiatives for continuous safety improvement. This is an exciting opportunity for a seasoned professional to make a significant impact on workplace safety and contribute to the operational efficiency and well-being of a dynamic industrial setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive health, safety, and environmental (HSE) management systems and procedures in line with national and international standards.
  • Conduct regular site inspections, hazard identification, and risk assessments across various industrial operations.
  • Monitor compliance with all relevant HSE legislation, company policies, and best practices.
  • Investigate all accidents, incidents, and near-misses, determining root causes and recommending corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Develop and deliver engaging HSE training programs for employees and contractors.
  • Maintain accurate records of HSE activities, incidents, training, and compliance reports.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance to management and employees on all HSE-related matters.
  • Coordinate with emergency services and internal teams for effective incident response and crisis management.
  • Prepare and submit periodic HSE performance reports to management.
  • Lead initiatives for continuous improvement in HSE performance and foster a proactive safety culture.

Required Skills

  • NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or equivalent
  • Minimum 3 years of progressive experience in an HSE role within an industrial or manufacturing environment
  • Strong knowledge of Nigerian HSE legislation and international best practices (e.g., OSHA, ISO 45001)
  • Proven ability to conduct risk assessments, audits, and incident investigations
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health, Safety Management, Engineering, or a related field
  • Membership in a recognized professional safety body (e.g., IOSH, ISPON)
  • Experience with HSE management software systems
  • First Aid/CPR certification
  • Experience in developing and implementing behavioural safety programs
