Job Description

We are seeking a highly competent and dedicated Health & Safety Officer to oversee and manage all occupational health and safety aspects within a dynamic industrial estate in Yangoji, Abuja. This professional role demands a proactive individual with a strong understanding of industrial safety protocols, regulatory compliance, and risk management strategies. The successful candidate will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring safety programs to ensure a safe working environment for all personnel, contractors, and visitors within the estate. This position is critical to maintaining operational continuity and protecting valuable assets by mitigating workplace hazards effectively.

As a Health & Safety Officer, you will be the primary point of contact for all safety-related matters, working closely with estate management, tenants, and external regulatory bodies. Your responsibilities will extend beyond mere compliance; you will be expected to cultivate a robust safety culture through engaging training, clear communication, and continuous improvement initiatives. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive Health & Safety policies and procedures aligned with national and international standards (e.g., OSHA, ISO 45001).
  • Conduct regular safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments across the industrial estate to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance.
  • Investigate all accidents, incidents, and near-misses, preparing detailed reports, identifying root causes, and recommending corrective actions.
  • Organize and deliver health and safety training programs for estate personnel and tenant employees on topics such as emergency response, hazardous material handling, and fire safety.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation and regulations in Nigeria, keeping abreast of any changes or updates.
  • Advise management and tenants on best practices for occupational health and safety, promoting a proactive safety culture.
  • Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incident reports, training sessions, and health surveillance.
  • Coordinate with emergency services and conduct regular emergency drills (e.g., fire, evacuation) to ensure preparedness.
  • Monitor contractor safety performance and ensure adherence to estate safety requirements.
  • Prepare and present regular performance reports on health and safety to estate management.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 4 years of proven experience as a Health & Safety Officer, preferably within an industrial or manufacturing environment.
  • HND or Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Recognized professional certifications such as NEBOSH IGC, ISPON, or equivalent.
  • In-depth knowledge of Nigerian health and safety legislation and international best practices.
  • Strong understanding of risk assessment methodologies and hazard identification.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency in incident investigation and root cause analysis techniques.
  • Ability to develop and deliver effective safety training programs.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Occupational Health & Safety or a related field.
  • Experience with ISO 45001 implementation and auditing.
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Familiarity with environmental management systems (e.g., ISO 14001).
  • Experience working with diverse industrial operations (e.g., manufacturing, logistics, warehousing).
