Career.supersecrets is actively seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Health & Safety Officer for a prominent industrial estate client located in Wuye, Abuja. This is a critical role for a professional who is passionate about creating and maintaining a safe and healthy working environment across a diverse range of industrial operations. As the Health & Safety Officer, you will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and enforcing robust occupational health and safety (OHS) programs, ensuring full compliance with national and international standards, and fostering a proactive safety culture amongst all stakeholders within the industrial estate.
Your expertise will be vital in conducting comprehensive risk assessments, identifying potential hazards, and formulating effective control measures tailored to the unique challenges of an industrial setting, which includes heavy machinery, hazardous materials, and complex logistical operations. You will lead incident investigations, analyze root causes, and recommend corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence, thereby significantly reducing workplace accidents and occupational illnesses. This role demands a hands-on approach, requiring regular site inspections, safety audits, and the ability to engage effectively with employees, contractors, and management at all levels. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) policies and procedures aligned with local regulations and international best practices for an industrial estate.
- Conduct regular site inspections, risk assessments, and safety audits to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety standards.
- Investigate all accidents, incidents, and near misses, determine root causes, and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
- Develop and deliver effective safety training programs for employees, contractors, and visitors, including inductions, emergency preparedness, and specialized equipment safety.
- Ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials and waste in accordance with environmental regulations.
- Manage and maintain safety documentation, including permits-to-work, safety data sheets (SDS), incident reports, and training records.
- Lead emergency response planning, drills, and coordination, including fire safety and first aid protocols.
- Liaise with regulatory bodies, external auditors, and internal stakeholders on all HSE matters.
- Promote a positive and proactive safety culture throughout the industrial estate through awareness campaigns and active engagement.
- Monitor and report on HSE performance metrics, recommending improvements and strategies to reduce risks.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in Health & Safety management within an industrial or manufacturing environment.
- In-depth knowledge of Nigerian HSE regulations and international standards (e.g., OSHA, ISO 45001).
- Strong understanding of risk assessment methodologies and hazard control techniques.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
- Proficiency in incident investigation and root cause analysis.
- Ability to develop and deliver effective safety training programs.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Preferred Qualifications
- NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or equivalent certification.
- Membership in a recognized professional safety body (e.g., ISPON, IOSH).
