Career.supersecrets is seeking a dedicated and experienced Health & Safety Officer to lead and manage all aspects of occupational health and safety within our bustling industrial estate in Kukwuaba, Abuja. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive occupational health and safety (OHS) policies and procedures in line with national regulations (e.g., Factories Act, OSHA Nigeria) and international best practices.
- Conduct regular workplace inspections, risk assessments, and safety audits across the industrial estate to identify hazards, assess risks, and recommend corrective and preventive measures.
- Investigate all incidents, accidents, near-misses, and occupational illnesses to determine root causes and implement effective corrective actions, preparing detailed reports and recommendations.
- Coordinate and deliver effective health and safety training programs for all employees, including new hire orientation, emergency procedures, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and specific machinery safety.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant environmental health and safety legislation, permits, and licensing requirements applicable to industrial operations.
- Manage and oversee hazardous waste disposal, chemical storage, and material handling procedures to minimize environmental impact and ensure worker safety.
- Develop and manage emergency response plans, fire prevention programs, and first aid provisions within the industrial estate.
- Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incident reports, training sessions, and safety-related documentation.
- Advise management on OHS performance, emerging risks, and opportunities for continuous improvement in safety systems.
- Collaborate with various departments, contractors, and regulatory bodies to ensure a unified approach to safety management.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Health & Safety Officer, preferably in an industrial, manufacturing, or facilities management environment.
- Strong knowledge of Nigerian occupational health and safety legislation (e.g., Factories Act, OSHA Nigeria) and environmental regulations.
- Proficiency in conducting risk assessments, hazard identification, and incident investigation techniques.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills to effectively train staff and interact with stakeholders.
- Ability to develop and implement effective OHS policies, procedures, and training programs.
- Demonstrated experience in emergency response planning, fire safety, and hazardous materials management.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for reporting and documentation.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with attention to detail.
- NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or equivalent recognized safety qualification.
- A Bachelor's degree in Environmental Safety, Industrial Safety, Engineering, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional membership with relevant safety bodies in Nigeria (e.g., ISPON, NIMASA certified safety professional).
- Experience with ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems) implementation and auditing.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Specific experience in managing health and safety for heavy machinery, electrical systems, or complex industrial processes.
- Master's degree in a related field.
