Career.supersecrets is seeking a dedicated and experienced Health & Safety Officer to oversee and enhance safety protocols within a prominent industrial estate in Abuja. This pivotal role involves safeguarding personnel, protecting assets, and ensuring strict adherence to all national and international health and safety regulations. You will be instrumental in fostering a proactive safety culture, conducting thorough risk assessments, implementing effective mitigation strategies, and leading safety training initiatives.
As a Health & Safety Officer, you will be the driving force behind operational safety, working closely with management and employees to identify hazards, prevent accidents, and promote a healthy work environment. Your expertise will be crucial in developing and enforcing safety policies, conducting regular inspections, and ensuring that all activities comply with statutory requirements and best industry practices. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and monitor comprehensive health and safety programs and policies in alignment with local regulations and international standards.
- Conduct regular site inspections and risk assessments to identify potential hazards and evaluate existing safety measures within the industrial estate.
- Investigate all accidents, incidents, and near-misses, determining root causes and recommending corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Organize and deliver health and safety training sessions for employees, contractors, and visitors, ensuring awareness and compliance with safety procedures.
- Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, training, and audits, preparing reports for management and regulatory bodies.
- Ensure all machinery, equipment, and processes comply with safety standards and are regularly inspected and maintained.
- Advise management on health and safety compliance matters, including changes in legislation and best practices.
- Develop and coordinate emergency response plans and evacuation procedures, conducting drills to ensure readiness.
- Liaise with relevant regulatory authorities (e.g., OSHA, Factory Inspectorate) on compliance matters and inspections.
- Champion a culture of continuous improvement in health and safety performance across all levels of the organization.
Required Skills
- Proven experience (minimum 4 years) as a Health & Safety Officer, preferably within an industrial or manufacturing environment.
- Strong knowledge of Nigerian health and safety legislation and international standards (e.g., OSHA, ISO 45001).
- Excellent risk assessment and hazard identification skills.
- Proficiency in developing and delivering engaging safety training programs.
- Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and leadership abilities.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and safety management software.
Preferred Qualifications
- NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or equivalent recognized safety certification.
- B.Sc. or HND in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Membership in a relevant professional body (e.g., Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria – ISPON, IOSH).
- Experience with implementing and managing safety management systems (SMS).
- First Aid/CPR certification with practical experience.
- Environmental management experience is a plus.
