Career.supersecrets is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Health & Safety Officer (Professional) to join our esteemed client’s team within a prominent industrial estate in Utako, Abuja. This pivotal role requires a proactive and experienced professional committed to upholding the highest standards of occupational health and safety. You will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring robust H&S policies and procedures, ensuring strict compliance with local regulations and international best practices. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and continuously review comprehensive Health & Safety policies and procedures tailored for an industrial estate.
- Conduct regular risk assessments, hazard identification, and safety audits across all operational areas within the industrial complex.
- Ensure strict compliance with all relevant national (e.g., Factories Act, OSHA regulations) and international H&S legislation and standards.
- Investigate all accidents, incidents, and near-misses thoroughly, determining root causes and recommending effective corrective and preventive actions.
- Organize, develop, and deliver engaging H&S training sessions for all employees, including new hires, contractors, and visitors.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of H&S inspections, incident reports, training matrices, and safety documentation.
- Advise site management and departmental heads on all H&S matters, contributing to strategic safety planning and budget allocation.
- Prepare and submit periodic H&S reports to management and relevant regulatory bodies as required by law.
- Oversee the proper selection, use, maintenance, and availability of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for all personnel.
- Lead emergency response planning, including fire drills, evacuation procedures, and first aid protocols, ensuring preparedness.
- Promote a proactive safety culture through awareness campaigns, safety meetings, and employee engagement initiatives.
Required Skills
- Proven experience (minimum 4 years) as a Health & Safety Officer, specifically within an industrial, manufacturing, or heavy-duty estate environment.
- Strong knowledge and practical understanding of Nigerian H&S regulations and enforcement bodies.
- Excellent understanding of occupational risk assessment methodologies, hazard identification, and control measures.
- Proficiency in implementing and maintaining H&S management systems (e.g., ISO 45001).
- Exceptional communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with diverse groups of employees and management.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and conduct effective H&S training programs.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities with meticulous attention to detail.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Valid First Aid and CPR certification.
Preferred Qualifications
- NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or an equivalent internationally recognized H&S qualification.
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, Industrial Safety, or a closely related field.
- Membership in a recognized professional body such as the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON).
- Experience with environmental management systems (e.g., ISO 14001) is an added advantage.
- Ability to speak multiple local Nigerian languages.
