As the Health & Safety Officer, you will be the cornerstone of our client’s commitment to operational excellence and worker well-being. Your day-to-day responsibilities will involve conducting comprehensive risk assessments, developing and delivering engaging safety training programs, and meticulously investigating incidents to prevent recurrence. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and monitor comprehensive health and safety policies and procedures in line with national regulations and international best practices.
- Conduct regular site inspections and audits to identify potential hazards, non-compliance issues, and areas for improvement, particularly within industrial machinery and operational processes.
- Lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, and recommend corrective and preventative actions to mitigate future risks.
- Organize and deliver engaging safety training sessions for all levels of staff, covering topics such as hazard communication, emergency procedures, LOTO, confined space entry, and ergonomic practices.
- Ensure all safety documentation, including risk assessments, method statements, and permits-to-work, are accurately completed and maintained.
- Manage the implementation of emergency response plans, including fire drills, evacuation procedures, and first aid coordination.
- Collaborate with departmental heads and management to integrate safety considerations into all operational planning and project execution.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation, standards, and industry best practices.
- Prepare and present detailed health and safety reports to management, outlining performance, incidents, and improvement strategies.
- Oversee the proper storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials in compliance with environmental regulations.
Required Skills
- NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or equivalent certification
- Minimum of 4 years of progressive experience as a Health & Safety Officer in an industrial or manufacturing setting
- Thorough knowledge of Nigerian health and safety legislation (e.g., Factories Act, OSHA Nigeria)
- Proficiency in conducting risk assessments, hazard identification, and incident investigation
- Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills to engage and influence staff at all levels
- Ability to develop and deliver effective safety training programs
- Demonstrated experience with safety management systems (e.g., ISO 45001)
- Competency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Engineering, or a related field
- Membership in a recognized professional safety body (e.g., IOSH, ISPON)
- Experience with fire safety management and emergency response coordination
- Knowledge of specific industrial hazards such as electrical safety, machine guarding, and working at heights
- First Aid and CPR certification
