Career.supersecrets is seeking a highly competent and proactive Health & Safety Officer to oversee and enhance safety protocols within a bustling industrial estate in Abuja. This professional role is critical in ensuring a secure and compliant environment for multiple businesses operating within the estate. You will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and enforcing health and safety policies and procedures that not only meet but exceed national and international standards. Your daily activities will involve meticulous risk assessments, regular site inspections, and the development of robust emergency response plans tailored to the diverse operations of an industrial setting, which may include manufacturing, logistics, and warehousing.
As the primary point of contact for all health and safety matters, you will champion a culture of safety awareness and accountability among all personnel, contractors, and visitors. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive Health & Safety policies, procedures, and systems specific to an industrial estate environment.
- Conduct regular and thorough risk assessments, hazard identification, and safety audits across all operational areas within the industrial estate.
- Ensure strict compliance with all relevant Nigerian occupational health and safety legislation, standards, and industry best practices.
- Lead incident investigations, document findings, determine root causes, and recommend effective corrective and preventative actions.
- Design and deliver engaging health and safety training programs for employees, contractors, and new hires.
- Manage and coordinate emergency response plans, including fire safety, first aid, and evacuation procedures.
- Monitor and report on H&S performance, identifying trends and recommending improvements to management.
- Liaise with regulatory bodies, external auditors, and stakeholders on all health and safety matters.
- Promote a proactive safety culture through awareness campaigns, safety meetings, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Oversee the proper storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials within the estate.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 4 years of proven experience as a Health & Safety Officer, preferably within an industrial or manufacturing setting.
- Professional certification such as NEBOSH General Certificate, IOSH Managing Safely, or equivalent.
- Comprehensive knowledge of Nigerian occupational health and safety regulations and standards.
- Demonstrated ability in conducting risk assessments, hazard analysis, and incident investigations.
- Strong communication, presentation, and training delivery skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
- Proven problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health, Safety Management, Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Membership in a recognized professional safety body (e.g., ISPON).
- Experience with ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management System) implementation and auditing.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Experience managing safety for multiple tenants or businesses within a single industrial complex.
