Are you a seasoned Health & Safety professional with a passion for cultivating secure industrial environments? The Abuja Integrated City Project (AICP) is seeking an experienced and dedicated Health & Safety Officer to lead our safety initiatives within our burgeoning industrial estate in Kwali, Abuja. This pivotal role requires a proactive individual who can develop, implement, and monitor robust health and safety programs, ensuring strict compliance with local regulations and international best practices.
As our Health & Safety Officer, you will be the guardian of well-being for all personnel, contractors, and visitors within the industrial estate. You will be instrumental in identifying potential hazards, assessing risks, and formulating preventative measures to mitigate them effectively. Your expertise will not only ensure a compliant operation but also foster a strong safety-first culture among all tenants and contractors. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and manage comprehensive health and safety policies and procedures specific to an industrial estate setting, in line with national and international standards.
- Conduct regular site inspections, risk assessments, and safety audits to identify potential hazards, evaluate risks, and ensure compliance with safety regulations and company standards.
- Investigate all incidents, accidents, and near-misses, determining root causes, implementing immediate corrective actions, and recommending long-term preventive strategies.
- Organize and deliver effective health and safety training programs for employees, contractors, and visitors, promoting a strong and embedded safety culture.
- Ensure all machinery, equipment, and working conditions comply with health and safety standards and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of safety inspections, training sessions, incidents, and other relevant documentation for reporting and analysis.
- Advise management on health and safety best practices, emerging regulatory changes, and their implications for the industrial estate's operations.
- Lead emergency response planning, conduct regular drills, and manage crisis situations effectively.
- Liaise and collaborate with government agencies and regulatory bodies on all health and safety matters, ensuring adherence to legal frameworks.
- Oversee the proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials and waste products within the estate.
- Promote occupational health and hygiene initiatives, including ergonomic assessments and wellness programs, to enhance employee well-being.
Required Skills
- NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or equivalent recognized H&S qualification.
- Minimum of 4 years of proven experience in Health & Safety management within an industrial, manufacturing, or large-scale construction environment.
- In-depth knowledge of Nigerian occupational health and safety regulations (e.g., Factories Act, OSHA) and environmental protection laws.
- Strong understanding of risk assessment methodologies, hazard identification, and control measures.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and engage diverse stakeholders.
- Proficiency in incident investigation, root cause analysis techniques, and report writing.
- Ability to develop and deliver engaging and effective safety training programs.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Professional membership with relevant national or international safety bodies (e.g., ISPON, IOSH, OSHAssociation).
- Experience with implementing and managing ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management System).
- Certified First Aid and Fire Safety Trainer.
- Previous experience working in a multi-stakeholder development project or integrated city environment.
