Career.supersecrets is seeking an experienced and dedicated Health & Safety Officer to join our professional team, specifically overseeing our burgeoning industrial estates in Suleja, Abuja. This pivotal role demands a proactive, detail-oriented professional committed to establishing and maintaining the highest standards of occupational health and safety. As a Health & Safety Officer, you will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring H&S policies and procedures, ensuring full compliance with national and international regulations, and cultivating a robust safety-first culture across all operational units within the estate.
Your mission will be to identify potential hazards, assess risks, and implement effective control measures to prevent accidents, injuries, and occupational health issues. This involves conducting regular site inspections, risk assessments, and safety audits, providing comprehensive reports, and recommending corrective actions. You will lead safety training programs, educating employees and contractors on safe work practices, emergency procedures, and the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Collaboration with various departments will be crucial to integrate safety protocols into daily operations, ensuring that health and safety considerations are embedded at every level of our industrial activities.
Beyond compliance, you will play a key role in promoting a continuous improvement mindset in H&S performance. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and monitor comprehensive Health & Safety policies and procedures.
- Conduct regular site inspections, risk assessments, and safety audits across the industrial estate.
- Ensure full compliance with national (e.g., Factories Act) and international H&S regulations (e.g., OSHA standards).
- Thoroughly investigate all incidents, accidents, and near-misses, identifying root causes and recommending effective corrective actions.
- Organize and deliver engaging H&S training programs for all employees and contractors.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date H&S records and prepare detailed reports for management.
- Provide expert advice to management on all H&S issues and foster a proactive safety culture.
- Oversee the proper selection, use, and maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Liaise effectively with regulatory bodies, emergency services, and other external stakeholders.
- Develop and manage emergency response plans and conduct regular drills to ensure preparedness.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as an H&S Officer, with significant exposure to industrial or manufacturing environments.
- In-depth knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations and best practices.

Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Engineering, or a related technical field.
- NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or equivalent professional certification (e.g., IOSH, OSHA certifications).
- Certified First Aid/CPR Responder.
- Experience with ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems) implementation and internal auditing.
- Proficiency in local languages (e.g., Hausa) is a plus for effective communication with the local workforce.
