Career.supersecrets is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Health & Safety Officer to join a prominent industrial facility located within the Guarimpa Estate, Abuja. This professional role is pivotal in upholding the highest standards of occupational health and safety across all operations, ensuring compliance with both national and international regulations. As a Health & Safety Officer, you will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring comprehensive safety programs tailored to an industrial environment, which includes machinery operation, material handling, and various manufacturing processes. Your expertise will directly contribute to a culture where safety is prioritized, risks are mitigated, and continuous improvement is a constant focus.
This position demands a proactive approach to identifying potential hazards, conducting thorough risk assessments, and formulating effective control measures. You will be responsible for leading safety training initiatives, educating staff on best practices, and ensuring that all personnel adhere to established safety protocols. Furthermore, you will be the go-to expert for incident investigation, meticulously documenting findings, identifying root causes, and recommending corrective actions to prevent recurrence. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and monitor comprehensive health and safety policies and procedures in line with national legislation and industry best practices.
- Conduct regular site inspections, risk assessments, and safety audits to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance.
- Investigate all workplace incidents, accidents, and near misses, documenting findings, determining root causes, and recommending corrective and preventive actions.
- Organize and deliver health and safety training programs for all employees, ensuring they are aware of their responsibilities and equipped with necessary safety knowledge.
- Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incident reports, training sessions, and health and safety statistics.
- Ensure the proper use, maintenance, and availability of personal protective equipment (PPE) across all industrial operations.
- Advise management on health and safety compliance issues, new regulations, and best practices.
- Collaborate with departmental managers to integrate safety considerations into operational planning and process changes.
- Manage emergency response procedures, including fire safety drills and first aid provisions.
- Promote a strong safety culture throughout the organization through communication, engagement, and leadership by example.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in occupational health and safety, preferably within an industrial or manufacturing environment.
- Proven knowledge of Nigerian health and safety legislation (e.g., Factories Act, OSHA) and international standards (e.g., ISO 45001).
- Strong ability to conduct detailed risk assessments, hazard identification, and incident investigations.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills to effectively train and engage employees at all levels.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for reporting and documentation.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement effective safety management systems.
- Valid professional certification in Health and Safety (e.g., NEBOSH IGC, ISPON, OSHA).
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or HND in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Membership in a relevant professional body (e.g., ISPON, IOSH).
- Experience with environmental management systems (e.g., ISO 14001).
- First Aid and Fire Safety certifications.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced industrial setting.
