Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Health & Safety Officer to join our dynamic team, specifically overseeing our operations within an industrial estate setting in Nyanya, Abuja. This pivotal role requires a seasoned professional with a deep understanding of occupational health and safety regulations, best practices, and their practical application in diverse industrial environments. The successful candidate will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring robust H&S policies and procedures, ensuring strict compliance with local laws and international standards (e.g., Factories Act, OSHA, ISO 45001), and fostering a strong, proactive safety culture across the entire industrial estate. You will be responsible for conducting regular, thorough site inspections, comprehensive safety audits, detailed risk assessments, meticulous incident investigations, and providing engaging, mandatory safety training to all personnel, including new hires and contractors. This role demands a proactive individual who can effectively identify potential hazards, meticulously analyze safety data, recommend practical and effective corrective actions, and continuously drive improvement in overall safety performance. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain effective Health & Safety Management Systems tailored for an industrial estate environment.
- Conduct regular site inspections, safety audits, and detailed risk assessments to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with H&S standards.
- Investigate all incidents, accidents, and near misses meticulously, determine root causes, and recommend comprehensive corrective and preventive actions.
- Provide comprehensive H&S training to employees, contractors, and visitors, including inductions, emergency procedures, and specific task-related safety.
- Ensure strict compliance with all relevant Nigerian H&S legislation (e.g., Factories Act) and company policies.
- Prepare and present detailed H&S reports, statistics, and performance metrics to management regularly.
- Develop and manage emergency response plans, including fire safety, first aid, and evacuation procedures.
- Advise management on H&S best practices, technological advancements, and regulatory changes to ensure continuous improvement.
- Oversee the proper storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials in accordance with regulations.
- Promote a strong safety culture through awareness campaigns, safety meetings, and active employee engagement initiatives.
- Coordinate with external regulatory bodies and agencies as required for audits and compliance.
- Implement and monitor permit-to-work systems for high-risk activities.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Health & Safety Officer in an industrial, manufacturing, or construction environment.
- Strong knowledge of Nigerian H&S legislation and international best practices (e.g., ISO 45001).
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a keen eye for detail and data interpretation.
- Ability to conduct thorough risk assessments and incident investigations with root cause analysis.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, capable of influencing, training, and engaging diverse groups.
- Proficiency in H&S management software and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Strong organizational, planning, and time management abilities.

Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
- NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or an equivalent recognized safety qualification.
- Membership in a relevant professional body (e.g., Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria – ISPON, IOSH).
- Certification in First Aid and Fire Safety.
- Experience with behavioral-based safety programs.
