Job Description
We are seeking an experienced and highly dedicated Health & Safety Officer to oversee and enhance safety protocols within a prominent industrial estate in Wuse, Abuja. This pivotal role requires a seasoned professional with a deep understanding of industrial safety practices, regulatory compliance, and a proactive approach to risk management. As a Health & Safety Officer, you will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring comprehensive health and safety management systems across multiple facilities within the estate, ensuring a safe working environment for all personnel and adherence to national and international standards.
Your responsibilities will span from conducting thorough risk assessments and site inspections to leading incident investigations and delivering engaging safety training programs. You will be the primary point of contact for all health and safety matters, liaising with management, employees, contractors, and regulatory bodies. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain effective Health & Safety policies, procedures, and management systems in alignment with national legislation and international best practices (e.g., ISO 45001).
- Conduct regular site inspections, risk assessments, and safety audits across the industrial estate to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance.
- Investigate all accidents, incidents, and near misses, determine root causes, and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
- Organize and deliver comprehensive health and safety training programs for employees, contractors, and visitors.
- Ensure timely and accurate reporting of H&S performance, incidents, and regulatory compliance to management and relevant authorities.
- Manage emergency preparedness plans, including fire safety, first aid, and evacuation procedures.
- Liaise with government regulatory bodies, inspectors, and other external stakeholders on H&S matters.
- Monitor and ensure the proper use and maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Advise on the selection, safe operation, and maintenance of machinery and equipment.
- Promote a strong safety culture through awareness campaigns, safety meetings, and continuous communication.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 4 years of progressive experience as a Health & Safety Officer in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
- In-depth knowledge of Nigerian occupational health and safety regulations (e.g., Factories Act, OSHA Nigeria) and relevant international standards.
- Demonstrable experience in conducting comprehensive risk assessments, incident investigations, and safety audits.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with diverse stakeholders.
- Proficiency in developing and delivering effective health and safety training programs.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a proactive approach to hazard identification and mitigation.
- Competency in using H&S management software and standard office applications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree or Higher National Diploma (HND) in Safety Management, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Professional certification such as NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC), OSHA certification, or equivalent.
- Membership in a recognized professional safety body (e.g., Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria – ISPON, IOSH).
- Experience in managing health and safety across multiple sites or a large industrial complex.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
