Job Description

Career.supersecrets is actively seeking a highly skilled and experienced Health & Safety Officer to join one of our esteemed clients operating within a prominent industrial estate in Abuja, FCT. This pivotal role demands a dedicated professional committed to upholding the highest standards of occupational health and safety across complex industrial operations. As a Health & Safety Officer, you will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring H&S policies and procedures, ensuring full compliance with national and international regulations, and fostering a robust safety culture. You will be responsible for conducting rigorous risk assessments, identifying potential hazards, and formulating effective control measures to mitigate workplace incidents and injuries. This role requires an individual with a proactive approach to safety management, excellent communication skills to train and engage staff at all levels, and a meticulous eye for detail in incident investigation and reporting. You will be a key advisor to management, guiding them on best practices and emerging safety trends to ensure a continuously safe and productive working environment within the industrial estate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and monitor occupational health and safety programs, policies, and procedures in line with national regulations and international best practices.
  • Conduct regular risk assessments and safety audits across the industrial estate to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Investigate all workplace incidents, accidents, and near misses, determine root causes, and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
  • Organize and deliver comprehensive safety training programs for employees, contractors, and visitors on various H&S topics, including emergency response, equipment safety, and hazardous materials handling.
  • Ensure proper maintenance and inspection of safety equipment, fire suppression systems, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Prepare and maintain accurate H&S records, reports, and documentation for regulatory bodies and internal management.
  • Advise management on health and safety matters, changes in legislation, and emerging industry trends.
  • Collaborate with department heads to integrate safety measures into operational processes and project planning.
  • Oversee waste management procedures and environmental compliance within the industrial estate.

Required Skills

  • Strong knowledge of Nigerian H&S legislation and regulations (e.g., Factories Act, OSHA).
  • Proven experience in risk assessment, hazard identification, and control measures.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for training and stakeholder engagement.
  • Proficiency in incident investigation and root cause analysis techniques.
  • Ability to develop and implement effective H&S management systems.
  • Computer literacy, including proficiency in MS Office Suite.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or equivalent professional safety certification.
  • Membership in a recognized professional safety body (e.g., IOSH, ISPON).
  • Experience working in a manufacturing, construction, or heavy industrial environment.
  • A Bachelor's degree or HND in Environmental Safety, Industrial Safety, Engineering, or a related field.
