Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Health & Safety Officer to join a leading industrial estate in Katampe, Abuja. This professional role is crucial for ensuring a safe, healthy, and compliant working environment for all employees, contractors, and visitors within the estate. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring occupational health and safety programs, policies, and procedures in line with national and international standards. This position demands a proactive individual with a strong understanding of industrial safety regulations, excellent problem-solving skills, and a commitment to fostering a strong safety culture.
As a Health & Safety Officer, you will be instrumental in identifying potential hazards, assessing risks, and implementing control measures to mitigate them. You will lead safety inspections, conduct thorough incident investigations, and ensure that all corrective actions are promptly addressed. A key part of your role will involve providing comprehensive health and safety training to various levels of staff, promoting awareness, and encouraging active participation in safety initiatives. You will also be responsible for maintaining meticulous records of all safety-related activities, preparing detailed reports for management, and staying abreast of the latest developments in occupational health and safety legislation and best practices. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and monitor comprehensive Health & Safety policies and procedures across the industrial estate.
- Conduct regular risk assessments, safety audits, and inspections to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Investigate all accidents, incidents, and near-misses, determining root causes and recommending corrective and preventive actions.
- Ensure strict adherence to local and international occupational health and safety legislation (e.g., Factories Act, OSHA standards).
- Organize and deliver engaging health and safety training programs for employees, contractors, and visitors.
- Maintain accurate records of all safety-related activities, including inspections, training, incidents, and equipment maintenance.
- Prepare detailed H&S reports for management, highlighting key findings, trends, and recommendations.
- Oversee the safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials and waste within the estate.
- Coordinate and conduct emergency response drills, including fire safety, first aid, and evacuation procedures.
- Liaise with regulatory bodies, external auditors, and other stakeholders on H&S matters.
- Promote a proactive safety culture through communication, engagement, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Required Skills
- NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or equivalent certification.
- Minimum of 3 years of proven experience as an H&S Officer, preferably in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
- In-depth knowledge of Nigerian occupational health and safety legislation and best practices.
- Demonstrable experience in risk assessment methodologies and incident investigation techniques.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and H&S management software.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health, Safety Management, Engineering, or a related field.
- Membership in a recognized professional safety body (e.g., ISPON, IOSH).
- Experience with ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Experience in training and capacity building.
