Job Description

This is an exceptional opportunity for a seasoned and proactive Health & Safety Officer to join a leading industrial estate in Jikwoyi, Abuja, through Career.supersecrets. We are seeking a dedicated professional to champion a robust culture of safety, ensuring meticulous adherence to all relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations within a dynamic multi-tenant industrial environment.

The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in maintaining a secure, compliant, and productive operational environment across a bustling industrial complex. This challenging yet rewarding position encompasses overseeing diverse industrial operations and processes, requiring a sharp eye for detail, robust analytical skills, and the ability to implement and continuously improve effective safety management systems. You will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring comprehensive health and safety programs, conducting thorough risk assessments, and ensuring all personnel within the estate, including tenants and contractors, are equipped with the knowledge and resources to work safely and responsibly.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will involve hands-on engagement across the entire industrial estate. From conducting regular, rigorous site inspections and audits to meticulously investigating incidents and near-misses, your actions will directly contribute to preventing accidents, mitigating risks, and fostering a proactive safety mindset amongst all stakeholders. You will be responsible for developing and refining emergency response plans, coordinating essential safety training sessions for both staff and tenants, and ensuring all safety equipment is properly maintained, calibrated, and readily available for use. This role demands not just deep technical expertise in occupational health and safety but also exceptional interpersonal skills to effectively influence, educate, and collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including estate management, employees, contractors, and relevant regulatory bodies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive health, safety, and environmental (HSE) management systems aligned with industry best practices.
  • Conduct regular, thorough site inspections and audits to identify potential hazards, assess risks, and ensure full compliance with all regulations.
  • Lead detailed incident investigations, perform root cause analysis, and implement effective corrective and preventive actions to avoid recurrence.
  • Develop and deliver engaging and effective HSE training programs for employees, contractors, and tenants within the industrial estate.
  • Perform comprehensive risk assessments for various industrial activities and processes, recommending and implementing appropriate control measures.
  • Ensure continuous compliance with all local and national HSE legislation, as well as relevant international standards (e.g., OSHA, ISO 45001).
  • Manage and coordinate emergency preparedness and response plans, including fire safety, medical emergencies, and evacuation procedures.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all safety-related activities, incidents, training, and compliance documentation.
  • Advise senior management on HSE performance, statutory requirements, emerging risks, and opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Promote a proactive and positive safety culture throughout the industrial estate through awareness campaigns, engagement initiatives, and leadership by example.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience (minimum 4 years) as a Health & Safety Officer, specifically in an industrial, manufacturing, or multi-tenant estate environment.
  • Strong knowledge of Nigerian HSE legislation (e.g., Factories Act, OSHA requirements) and international safety standards (e.g., ISO 45001).
  • Excellent skills in risk assessment, hazard identification, and incident investigation methodologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, customize, and deliver impactful safety training programs.
  • Proficiency in conducting comprehensive site inspections, safety audits, and compliance checks.
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills to engage diverse stakeholders.
  • Competency in using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for reporting and documentation.
  • Ability to work autonomously, prioritize tasks effectively, and collaborate seamlessly within a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or an equivalent accredited HSE qualification.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or other advanced professional safety certifications.
  • Membership in relevant professional safety bodies such as the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON).
  • Experience with environmental management systems (e.g., ISO 14001) is a significant advantage.
  • Valid First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Proven track record of managing safety across diverse industrial processes and multiple client/tenant interfaces.
