Are you an experienced and proactive Health & Safety Professional passionate about fostering a secure work environment? Julius Berger Nigeria Plc is seeking a dedicated Health & Safety Officer to join our team, specifically overseeing an industrial estate within Abuja. In this critical role, you will be instrumental in implementing, monitoring, and enforcing our comprehensive health and safety management systems. You will be responsible for ensuring compliance with all national and international H&S regulations, company policies, and best practices across various industrial operations, including manufacturing, logistics, and maintenance. This position requires a vigilant professional who can identify potential hazards, conduct thorough risk assessments, develop preventative strategies, and champion a strong safety culture amongst all stakeholders. You will be a key advisor on all health and safety matters, guiding management and employees towards achieving zero incidents and promoting continuous improvement in our safety performance. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and monitor robust health and safety policies and procedures aligned with national laws and international standards (e.g., ISO 45001).
- Conduct regular safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments across the industrial estate to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance.
- Investigate incidents, accidents, and near-misses, determining root causes and recommending corrective and preventative actions.
- Organize and deliver comprehensive safety training programs for employees, contractors, and visitors on various H&S topics.
- Maintain accurate records of H&S incidents, inspections, training, and compliance activities.
- Advise management on health and safety performance, new regulations, and best practices.
- Prepare and submit regular H&S reports to senior management and relevant regulatory bodies.
- Ensure the availability and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) throughout the industrial estate.
- Coordinate with emergency services and internal teams to develop and practice effective emergency response plans.
- Champion a proactive safety culture, encouraging active participation and ownership of H&S responsibilities by all personnel.
- Monitor contractor safety performance and provide guidance to ensure adherence to company H&S standards.
Required Skills
- NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or equivalent recognized H&S qualification.
- Proven experience in Health & Safety management within an industrial, manufacturing, or heavy construction environment.
- Thorough knowledge of Nigerian H&S regulations (e.g., Factories Act, OSHA Nigeria) and international best practices (e.g., OSHA, ISO 45001).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including report writing and presentation abilities.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for risk assessment and incident investigation.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills to influence and engage staff at all levels.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Safety Management, Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related technical field.
- Lead Auditor certification for ISO 45001.
- Experience with permit-to-work systems and confined space entry procedures.
- Membership in a recognized professional safety body (e.g., IOSH, ISPON).
