Career.supersecrets, a premier talent acquisition firm, is actively seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Health & Safety Officer to join a dynamic industrial estate environment in Karu, Abuja. This pivotal full-time role calls for a seasoned professional passionate about cultivating an ironclad safety culture, ensuring strict compliance with local and international health and safety regulations, and championing best practices across diverse industrial operations. You will be instrumental in protecting our client’s workforce, assets, and reputation, playing a crucial role in preventing incidents and promoting a secure and healthy workplace.

As the Health & Safety Officer, you will be the primary custodian of safety standards within a bustling industrial complex. Your day-to-day will involve conducting rigorous risk assessments, developing and implementing comprehensive safety policies and procedures, and leading safety training initiatives for all personnel. We are looking for an individual with a proactive approach to hazard identification, meticulous in their inspections, and effective in their communication of safety protocols. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of industrial safety challenges, from machinery operation to chemical handling, and be adept at fostering a collaborative environment where safety is everyone’s responsibility. This role offers the unique opportunity to make a tangible impact on the well-being of hundreds, contributing directly to operational continuity and excellence in a rapidly growing industrial hub. Your leadership in safety will be critical to the success and sustainability of the estate’s diverse businesses.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and monitor robust Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) policies and procedures in line with national and international standards.
  • Conduct regular site inspections and risk assessments to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Investigate accidents, incidents, and near-misses, preparing detailed reports and recommending corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Organize and deliver comprehensive safety training programs for all employees, contractors, and visitors.
  • Ensure all industrial equipment and machinery comply with safety standards and operational protocols.
  • Manage waste disposal and environmental protection initiatives within the industrial estate.
  • Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, training, and compliance activities.
  • Advise management on new safety legislation and best practices.
  • Coordinate with emergency services and lead emergency preparedness drills.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a Health & Safety Officer, particularly in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of Nigerian HSE legislation (e.g., Factories Act, OSHA) and international safety standards (e.g., ISO 45001).
  • Strong analytical skills for conducting risk assessments and incident investigations.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in using safety management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to develop and deliver effective safety training programs.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Professional certifications such as NEBOSH IGC, ISPON (Graduate/Certified), OSHA certifications.
  • Experience with environmental management systems (e.g., ISO 14001).
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Familiarity with waste management protocols in an industrial setting.
