Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Health & Safety Officer to oversee and manage all aspects of health, safety, and environmental compliance within a vibrant industrial estate located in Maitama, Abuja. This professional position requires a proactive, detail-oriented individual with a strong understanding of industrial safety regulations, best practices, and a steadfast commitment to fostering a culture of zero harm. You will be responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring health and safety programs, conducting rigorous risk assessments, and ensuring strict adherence to national and international standards across all operations within the estate. Your expertise will be crucial in identifying potential hazards, mitigating risks effectively, and driving continuous improvement in overall safety performance. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive Health & Safety policies and procedures in line with national regulations (e.g., Factories Act, OSHA Nigeria) and international best practices (e.g., ISO 45001).
- Conduct regular and thorough risk assessments, hazard identification, and safety audits across the industrial estate, recommending and overseeing the implementation of corrective actions.
- Investigate all incidents, accidents, and near-misses, preparing detailed reports, identifying root causes, and implementing robust preventative measures.
- Coordinate and deliver engaging safety training programs for all levels of staff, contractors, and visitors, including inductions, emergency procedures, and specific hazard awareness.
- Ensure complete compliance with environmental regulations and standards applicable to industrial estate operations, promoting sustainable practices.
- Manage emergency preparedness and response plans, including fire safety, first aid protocols, and effective evacuation procedures, conducting regular drills.
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive records of safety inspections, incidents, training activities, and all compliance documentation.
- Advise management proactively on health and safety performance, potential regulatory changes, and opportunities for continuous improvement initiatives.
- Oversee the proper selection, use, and maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) across the estate, ensuring availability and compliance.
- Lead safety committee meetings, actively fostering a proactive safety culture and encouraging employee participation in health and safety matters.
Required Skills
- Proven experience (minimum 3 years) as a Health & Safety Officer, preferably within an industrial, manufacturing, or large-scale estate management environment.
- Deep understanding and practical application of Nigerian health and safety legislation (e.g., Factories Act, Labour Act) and relevant international standards.
- Strong analytical skills for conducting comprehensive risk assessments, incident investigations, and data interpretation.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate complex information clearly.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for reporting and presentations.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team, effectively managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to influence, educate, and motivate personnel at all levels to adopt best safety practices.
Preferred Qualifications
- NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or an equivalent, internationally recognized safety certification.
- BSc/HND in Environmental Science, Engineering, Industrial Safety, Occupational Health, or a closely related field.
- Membership in a recognized professional safety body (e.g., IOSH, ISPON, ASSE).
- Experience with environmental management systems (e.g., ISO 14001) is a significant advantage.
- Valid First Aid and Fire Safety certification.
