Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Health & Safety Officer to join our dynamic team, specifically overseeing operations within our industrial estate projects in the Central Area, Abuja. This pivotal role involves ensuring a safe and compliant working environment across all industrial operations, encompassing manufacturing, fabrication, and logistics activities within our designated sites. As a professional Health & Safety Officer, you will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring robust health and safety policies and procedures that align with national regulations and international best practices. You will be responsible for conducting regular site inspections, identifying potential hazards, and recommending corrective actions to mitigate risks effectively. This position demands a proactive approach to safety management, a keen eye for detail, and the ability to influence a strong safety culture among all personnel. You will lead safety training initiatives, investigate incidents, and maintain meticulous records to demonstrate compliance and drive continuous improvement. Your expertise will be crucial in fostering an environment where safety is paramount, ensuring the well-being of our workforce and the operational integrity of our industrial facilities. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and enforce comprehensive health and safety policies and procedures specific to industrial estate operations.
  • Conduct regular and thorough site inspections, audits, and risk assessments to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with statutory requirements and company standards.
  • Investigate all accidents, incidents, and near-misses, determining root causes and recommending effective preventative measures.
  • Organize and deliver health and safety training programs for all employees, contractors, and visitors, including inductions, toolbox talks, and specialized safety courses.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date health and safety records, reports, and documentation as required by regulatory bodies and internal policies.
  • Liaise with external regulatory bodies (e.g., OSHA, Factories Inspectorate) and represent the company during inspections or inquiries.
  • Advise management on safety-related matters, including the selection of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe work methods.
  • Monitor the proper use, maintenance, and storage of machinery, equipment, and hazardous materials.
  • Promote a positive safety culture through continuous communication, awareness campaigns, and employee engagement.
  • Prepare and submit periodic safety performance reports to management, highlighting trends and recommending improvements.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or equivalent recognized safety qualification.
  • Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience as a Health & Safety Officer, preferably within an industrial, manufacturing, or heavy construction environment.
  • Thorough knowledge of Nigerian health and safety legislation and international best practices (e.g., OSHA, ISO 45001).
  • Proven ability to conduct risk assessments, incident investigations, and safety audits.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to train and influence at all levels.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced safety certification (e.g., NEBOSH Diploma, CSP, CSM).
  • Experience with environmental management systems (ISO 14001).
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Knowledge of specific safety protocols for industrial machinery, electrical safety, and hazardous waste management.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
