Job Description

Transnet SOC Ltd. is seeking a dedicated and experienced Health and Safety Officer (SHEQ) to join our team at the bustling Port of Richards Bay. This pivotal role involves championing and implementing robust safety, health, environmental, and quality management systems across our extensive port operations. You will be instrumental in ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation, company policies, and international standards, thereby safeguarding our employees, contractors, assets, and the environment.

The Health and Safety Officer will be at the forefront of driving a proactive safety culture, conducting thorough risk assessments, and developing preventative measures to mitigate potential hazards inherent in a large-scale port environment. Your day-to-day will involve a mix of field work, policy development, training, and auditing, ensuring our operations remain incident-free and environmentally responsible. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive SHEQ management systems and procedures in accordance with national legislation (e.g., OHS Act, NEMA) and Transnet policies.
  • Conduct regular SHEQ inspections, audits, and risk assessments across all port operations to identify hazards, assess risks, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Investigate all incidents, accidents, near misses, and occupational diseases, identifying root causes and implementing preventative measures to avoid recurrence.
  • Deliver SHEQ training programs and awareness campaigns to employees and contractors, ensuring understanding and compliance with safety protocols.
  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting of all SHEQ-related data, statistics, and incidents to management and relevant regulatory bodies.
  • Collaborate with operational teams and management to integrate SHEQ requirements into daily activities and project planning.
  • Monitor and manage environmental aspects and impacts of port operations, ensuring compliance with environmental permits and sustainability goals.
  • Oversee emergency preparedness and response plans, including fire safety, hazardous material spills, and medical emergencies.
  • Facilitate SHEQ committee meetings, record minutes, and ensure the effective implementation of action plans.
  • Stay updated on relevant SHEQ legislation, industry best practices, and technological advancements to continually improve safety performance.

Required Skills

  • National Diploma or Degree in Safety Management, Environmental Health, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience as a Health and Safety Officer, preferably in heavy industry, logistics, or port operations.
  • Proven knowledge of OHS Act, ISO 45001, ISO 14001, and relevant environmental legislation.
  • Strong understanding of risk assessment methodologies and incident investigation techniques.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Valid South African driver’s license.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • SACPCMP registered (Pr. OHS) or working towards registration.
  • Experience with integrated SHEQ management systems.
  • First Aid and Fire Fighting certifications.
  • Working knowledge of SAMTRAC or equivalent qualification.
  • Experience in a unionized environment.
