Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Health and Safety Officer to join our dynamic team at our primary manufacturing facility in Derby. This critical role is integral to upholding Rolls-Royce’s unwavering commitment to occupational health and safety standards across our complex engineering and manufacturing environments. As a Health and Safety Officer, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring that all operations comply with stringent internal policies, national regulations, and international best practices. Your expertise will be crucial in identifying potential hazards, conducting thorough risk assessments, and implementing proactive measures to mitigate risks. You will be responsible for developing and delivering comprehensive safety training programs, fostering a strong safety-conscious culture among all employees, and meticulously documenting all safety-related incidents, investigations, and improvements.
This position demands a proactive individual with a keen eye for detail, excellent communication skills, and the ability to influence positive safety behaviours at all levels. You will work collaboratively with various departments, including production, engineering, and human resources, to integrate safety considerations into every aspect of our operations. The role involves regular site inspections, audits, and the provision of expert advice on a wide range of health and safety matters, from machinery guarding to chemical handling and emergency preparedness. You will also be instrumental in driving continuous improvement initiatives, staying abreast of the latest legislative changes, and adapting our safety management systems accordingly. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct regular site inspections and audits to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and company policies.
- Develop, implement, and monitor robust health and safety procedures and systems.
- Lead and conduct detailed risk assessments, method statements, and COSHH assessments for all site activities.
- Investigate all incidents, accidents, and near misses, identify root causes, and recommend corrective and preventative actions.
- Develop and deliver engaging health and safety training programs for employees at all levels.
- Advise management and employees on health and safety matters, promoting a proactive safety culture.
- Maintain accurate records of all health and safety activities, incidents, and training.
- Prepare and present regular reports on H&S performance to management.
- Ensure all safety equipment is properly maintained and regularly inspected.
- Stay updated with new legislation and best practices in occupational health and safety.
- Collaborate with external bodies (e.g., HSE) as required.
- Support the development and implementation of emergency response plans.
Required Skills
- NEBOSH General Certificate (or equivalent qualification)
- Proven experience as a Health and Safety Officer, preferably within a manufacturing or heavy industry environment.
- Thorough knowledge of UK health and safety legislation (e.g., HASAWA, CDM, COSHH, LOLER, PUWER).
- Strong analytical skills for conducting risk assessments and incident investigations.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
- Ability to influence and engage staff at all levels.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong organisational and time management skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- NEBOSH Diploma (or working towards)
- IEMA Certificate or similar environmental qualification
- Experience with ISO 45001 implementation and auditing
- First Aid at Work certification
- Experience in a complex, multi-site operational environment
