Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine landscaping tasks, including mowing, edging, weeding, pruning, and mulching of lawns and garden beds.
- Plant and maintain flowers, shrubs, trees, and other plant materials across campus.
- Operate and maintain various landscaping equipment, such as mowers, trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, and hand tools, safely and efficiently.
- Monitor and maintain irrigation systems, adjusting as needed to ensure optimal plant health and water conservation.
- Clear pathways, roads, parking lots, and other outdoor areas of debris, leaves, snow (if applicable), and other hazards to ensure safety and accessibility.
- Assist with the preparation and maintenance of sports fields, recreational areas, and outdoor event spaces.
- Identify and report signs of plant disease, pest infestation, or equipment malfunction in a timely manner.
- Conduct minor repairs and maintenance on outdoor facilities and structures, such as fences, benches, and signage, as required.
- Adhere strictly to all safety regulations, university policies, and environmental guidelines.
- Contribute to waste management and recycling initiatives on campus grounds.
- Collaborate effectively with team members and other university departments to ensure coordinated maintenance efforts.
Required Skills
- Proven experience (minimum 2 years) as a Groundskeeper or in a similar professional landscaping role.
- Proficiency in operating and performing basic maintenance on a range of landscaping equipment (e.g., commercial mowers, string trimmers, leaf blowers, hedge trimmers).
- Solid knowledge of horticultural practices, including planting techniques, pruning, fertilization, and basic pest and disease control.
- Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks for extended periods and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality, aesthetically pleasing results.
- Basic understanding of irrigation systems and their operation.
- Valid driver's license.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to follow instructions and work independently.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certificate or diploma in horticulture, landscaping, grounds management, or a related field.
- Experience working in an institutional setting (e.g., university, college, large corporate campus, public park).
- Knowledge of indigenous plant species suitable for the Limpopo region and sustainable landscaping practices.
- Familiarity with environmental health and safety regulations pertinent to grounds maintenance.
- First Aid certification or willingness to obtain one.
