Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and safety-conscious Grain Silo Operator to join our team in Harrismith, Free State. This is a critical role responsible for the efficient and safe operation of our grain silo facilities, ensuring the proper handling, storage, and dispatch of various grain commodities. While the core operational aspects of this role are inherently on-site, we embrace modern work methodologies where possible. This ‘Hybrid’ work model will allow for certain administrative tasks, safety training modules, data reporting, or planning meetings to be conducted remotely, fostering flexibility while maintaining our high operational standards. Key Responsibilities
- Operate and monitor grain handling equipment, including conveyors, elevators, and dryers.
- Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance on all silo machinery and infrastructure.
- Monitor grain quality, moisture levels, and temperature, taking corrective actions as necessary.
- Assist with the loading and unloading of grain from trucks and railcars, ensuring accurate documentation.
- Maintain accurate records of grain movement, stock levels, and operational activities.
- Adhere strictly to all safety regulations, procedures, and company policies, including emergency protocols.
- Conduct regular cleaning and housekeeping of the silo facilities to maintain a safe and hygienic environment.
- Identify and report any equipment malfunctions, safety hazards, or quality issues promptly.
- Participate in regular safety meetings and training sessions, some of which may be conducted remotely.
- Perform data entry and administrative tasks related to grain inventory and operational reports, with potential for remote completion.
- Collaborate effectively with other team members, supervisors, and external stakeholders.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in operating heavy machinery or agricultural equipment.
- Strong understanding of workplace safety regulations and practices.
- Basic mechanical aptitude for minor maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting, bending, and working at heights.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records.
- Effective communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.
- Basic computer literacy for data entry and reporting.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and shifts, as required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Matric/Grade 12 certificate.
- Relevant certification in grain handling, machinery operation, or a related field.
- Previous experience specifically within a grain silo or agricultural storage facility.
- Knowledge of grain quality standards and fumigation practices.
- Valid driver's license.
