Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented GIS Technician to join our dynamic team at the Sishen Mine operations near Dingleton, Northern Cape. This pivotal role involves the creation, management, analysis, and presentation of spatial data crucial for our mining, exploration, environmental, and operational planning activities. As a GIS Technician, you will be instrumental in supporting various departments by providing accurate and timely geospatial information, maps, and reports that directly contribute to strategic decision-making and operational efficiency. You will be responsible for maintaining the integrity and accuracy of our extensive spatial databases, ensuring all data complies with company standards and regulatory requirements. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, maintain, and update accurate spatial databases for mining operations, geology, exploration, environmental management, and infrastructure.
- Perform spatial analysis, geoprocessing, and data interpretation to support various departmental needs and projects.
- Create high-quality cartographic products, including maps, charts, and diagrams, for presentations, reports, and operational use.
- Integrate data from multiple sources (e.g., GPS, remote sensing, CAD, surveying) into the GIS platform.
- Assist in the collection, validation, and quality control of geospatial data, ensuring accuracy and consistency.
- Provide technical support and training to end-users on GIS applications and data access.
- Collaborate with geologists, engineers, environmental scientists, and other stakeholders to understand their data requirements and deliver effective GIS solutions.
- Adhere to company data management standards, protocols, and safety regulations.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in ArcGIS Desktop/Pro or similar GIS software (e.g., QGIS).
- Strong understanding of geospatial data management, including projections, coordinate systems, and data formats.
- Experience with spatial database management (e.g., PostgreSQL/PostGIS, SQL Server, Oracle Spatial).
- Familiarity with GPS data collection and processing techniques.
- Ability to interpret aerial imagery, satellite data, and other remote sensing inputs.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
- Relevant Diploma or Degree in GIS, Geomatics, Geography, Earth Sciences, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
- BSc/BTech in Geoinformatics, Surveying, Mining Engineering, or Environmental Science with a strong GIS component.
- Experience with Python scripting for GIS automation and data processing.
- Knowledge of mining industry practices and data standards.
