Job Description

Are you a skilled and motivated General Builder with a passion for constructing durable and aesthetically pleasing structures? Phumelela Civil & Plant Hire is seeking a dedicated General Builder to join our dynamic team in Tshing, North West. As a General Builder, you will be a cornerstone of our on-site operations, involved in various stages of construction from groundwork to finishing touches. Key Responsibilities

  • Execute various construction tasks including bricklaying, plastering, concrete work, and basic carpentry.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications accurately to ensure precise execution.
  • Prepare construction sites by clearing debris, digging trenches, setting up formwork, and erecting scaffolding.
  • Mix and pour concrete, lay bricks and blocks, and apply mortar following industry best practices and quality standards.
  • Perform basic plumbing and electrical rough-in tasks under supervision or as qualified.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools safely and efficiently, ensuring their proper care.
  • Ensure all work complies with South African building codes, safety regulations, and Phumelela's quality standards.
  • Collaborate effectively with site managers, other builders, and tradespeople to ensure project synergy.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment at all times, adhering to all safety protocols.
  • Identify and report any potential hazards, structural issues, or material deficiencies promptly.
  • Assist with the erection and dismantling of temporary structures and site facilities.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior team members or apprentices when required.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience (minimum 3 years) as a General Builder or similar role in construction.
  • Solid knowledge of construction methods, materials, and tools specific to South African building practices.
  • Proficiency in bricklaying, plastering, concrete work, and general site preparation.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and construction specifications accurately.
  • Strong understanding of occupational health and safety regulations on construction sites.
  • Excellent physical stamina, dexterity, and the ability to perform demanding manual labour.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills, with a collaborative approach to problem-solving.
  • Problem-solving aptitude and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively on site.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant trade certification or vocational training in building construction (e.g., NQF Level 3/4).
  • Experience with operating specific construction machinery (e.g., concrete mixers, plate compactors, small excavators).
  • Basic first aid certification or willingness to obtain one.
  • Valid South African driver's license (Code 8/B or higher).
