We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Full-Time Gardener to join our esteemed Estate Maintenance team at Mount Nelson, a Belmond Hotel. Key Responsibilities
- Perform daily gardening duties including planting, pruning, weeding, watering, mulching, and fertilizing various plants, shrubs, trees, and flowers across the estate.
- Maintain lawns to impeccable standards, including mowing, edging, trimming, and aeration.
- Operate and maintain gardening equipment and tools safely and efficiently (e.g., mowers, trimmers, blowers, chainsaws), ensuring they are in good working order and reporting any malfunctions.
- Monitor plant health, identify pests and diseases, and apply appropriate organic or approved chemical treatments under guidance.
- Assist with the installation, maintenance, and repair of irrigation systems to ensure optimal water distribution and conservation.
- Participate in landscape projects, including new plantings, hardscaping elements, and seasonal displays that enhance the hotel’s aesthetic.
- Ensure pathways, patios, and outdoor common areas are clean, tidy, and free from debris, contributing to overall property presentation.
- Adhere to all health and safety regulations, environmental guidelines, and company policies, fostering a safe work environment.
- Report any maintenance issues or concerns regarding the grounds or equipment to the Head Gardener promptly.
- Contribute to a positive and collaborative team environment, sharing knowledge and supporting colleagues in achieving common goals.
Required Skills
- Proven experience (minimum 18 months) as a gardener or groundskeeper, preferably in a luxury hotel, private estate, or similar high-standard environment.
- Solid knowledge of horticultural practices, plant identification, soil management, and seasonal plant care.
- Ability to safely and competently operate and maintain a variety of gardening tools and machinery.
- Physical fitness and stamina to perform manual labor in various weather conditions and lift heavy objects when required.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high aesthetic standards in a luxury setting.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as effectively collaborate as part of a team.
- Basic understanding of irrigation systems and water conservation techniques.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills to manage daily tasks efficiently.
Preferred Qualifications
- A formal qualification (certificate or diploma) in Horticulture, Landscaping, or a related agricultural field.
- Experience with indigenous South African flora and water-wise gardening techniques specific to the Western Cape climate.
- Knowledge of organic pest and disease identification and control methods.
- Valid South African driver’s license.
